Sibiu
Aprox. 151,894 habitantesApprox. 151,894 people
Sibiu is one of the best-preserved Saxon towns in Transylvania, in central Romania at the foot of the Făgăraș mountains. German settlers founded it in the 12th century, and the old town splits into an Upper Town and a Lower Town linked by stairways and passages. It was European Capital of Culture in 2007. What sticks with people are the 'houses with eyes': oval attic windows on the rooftops that seem to watch you. It's compact, very walkable and a good deal calmer than Bucharest.
Mejor épocaBest time
May to September, with long mild days; August is warm and the squares come alive. Winter is cold and snowy, pretty but you'll want serious layers.

Romania is among the cheapest spots in the EU. A backpacker gets by on little: local food, lodging and beer run well below Western Europe.
EntradaEntry
Romania is in the EU and now part of Schengen by air and sea. Many nationalities enter visa-free for tourism.
The whole old town is walkable; Upper and Lower Town are minutes apart. For trips into the Carpathians a rental car helps a lot.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Sibiu? How much do you need per month in Sibiu?
Sibiu works if you want a cheap, very safe, genuinely beautiful European base for heads-down work: some of the best internet on the continent for almost nothing, among the lowest prices in the EU, and a medieval center you can cross on foot in twenty minutes, with mountains half an hour away. It does not work if you need a nomad scene, nightlife, or direct flights: this is a city of roughly 150,000 people, you can count the coworking spaces on one hand, daily life happens in Romanian, and the grey winter runs November to March. Think productivity cave with mountains next door, not nomad hub.

This is Romania's strongest card, and Sibiu is no exception: fiber from Digi, Orange, or Vodafone at 300 Mbps to 1 Gbps, very high upload and low latency, for ≈US$9–14 a month. Installation takes days, not weeks, and it holds up under all-day video calls without drama. Mobile 4G coverage is solid across the city and most of the surrounding villages, 5G is already live in town, and data is nearly free. There are no scheduled blackouts and no censorship. The one real weak spot: some very old buildings in the historic center have only one wired provider or shaky electrical work — ask which fiber actually reaches the apartment before you sign the lease, not after.
CoworkingCoworking
The scene is small, and that is the honest answer: Sibiu has a handful of coworking spaces and several cafés with decent wifi, nothing like Cluj (about 3 hours away), Brașov (2–3 hours), or Bucharest (4–5 hours). A monthly hot desk runs ≈US$70–130 and usually includes a meeting room and coffee. I would rather not hand you names I am not fully sure of, because in small cities these places open and close fast: when you land, search "coworking Sibiu" on the map and go see two or three in one afternoon — here you decide in person. Plenty of people end up working from home, because the fiber allows it, and use the center's cafés so they do not turn into hermits.
The Historic Center or Upper Town (Orașul de Sus), around Piața Mare, Piața Mică, and the pedestrian Nicolae Bălcescu street, is the prettiest and priciest: everything on foot, and terrace noise until late in summer. The Lower Town (Orașul de Jos), around Strada Ocnei and Piața Aurarilor, is still central but quieter and a bit cheaper, full of old houses with real character. Calea Dumbrăvii and the Sub Arini park area — the tree-lined avenue running down toward the Dumbrava forest — is where the local middle class lives: solid buildings, greenery, ideal if you run or walk daily. And for a real budget, look at Ștrand, Hipodrom, Vasile Aaron, or Turnișor: residential blocks, supermarkets, local prices, 15–25 minutes on foot or one bus from the center.
ComunidadCommunity
Sibiu is friendly but small. Younger Romanians speak decent English, and the city carries a German Saxon heritage — it was Hermannstadt, and there is still a German-language school, a German section at the national theater, and a German weekly paper — so German opens doors too. Spanish-speaking community: minimal, a handful of students and workers, not much more; Spanish will not get you through the day. The nomad scene is counted in dozens, not hundreds, and revolves around a couple of coworking spaces, Transylvania expat groups on Facebook and Telegram, and the big annual events (the Sibiu International Theatre Festival in June fills the whole city). If you are the type who walks up and starts talking, you will make local friends fast; if you expect to land inside a ready-made nomad community, you will feel the silence.
One: winter is long and genuinely cold — snow and grey days from November through March, and the heating bill can double your utilities; if sunlight matters to you, come May to September first and test it. Two: since Romania's full Schengen entry (air and sea in March 2024, land borders on 1 January 2025), your days here DO count toward the Schengen 90/180 allowance — they did not before, and plenty of outdated guides still say otherwise. Romania has a digital nomad visa, but the income bar is high: it is pegged to three times the average Romanian gross salary, a figure that is updated every year and has been climbing (in recent years it has run from roughly €3,300 to over €4,500 a month, documented). Do not treat it as a fixed number — confirm it with the consulate before you build a plan on it. Three: rents are advertised in euros but paid in lei — Romania is not on the euro — and many landlords prefer cash and informal arrangements: insist on a written contract and receipts, and budget one to two months' deposit. And watch the price trend: Sibiu is not the bargain it was five years ago. Inflation hit hard in 2022–2023, and in 2025 fiscal changes pushed things up again — VAT went from 19% to 21% and the cap on electricity prices was lifted, so utilities and food cost more than any older table you find online. The good news: it is one of the safest cities in the region, with no no-go areas; the real annoyances are stray dogs on the outskirts, poorly lit streets outside the center, and a small airport with few routes (flying via Bucharest or Cluj is often cheaper).
Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
