Iași (pronounced 'Yash') is the great city of northeastern Romania and the historic capital of the Moldavia region, next to the border with the Republic of Moldova. It was the capital of the principality and remains a cultural heavyweight: home to the country's oldest university, Alexandru Ioan Cuza, and a density of churches that earned it the nickname city of monasteries. Its skyline is dominated by the Palace of Culture, a huge neo-Gothic building. It's a lively, cheap university city, spread over seven hills.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Iași?How much do you need per month in Iași?
Iași works for you if you want a genuinely cheap European base with world-class internet, a lively university-town feel and a real local tech sector that makes it easy to meet people who work like you — all for well under what Lisbon or Prague costs. It doesn't work if you want mild weather, a big nomad scene or frequent flights: winter is grey and sub-zero from November to February (and summer brings 35 °C+ heat waves), the foreign community is mostly students and IT people on contracts rather than nomads passing through, and although the airport has cheap routes to Western Europe, plenty of destinations still mean connecting via Bucharest. Daily life happens in Romanian, though under-40s and the whole tech crowd speak English.

This is Iași's strongest card. Romania has some of the best and cheapest home fibre in Europe: plans from a few hundred Mbps up to ~1 Gbps, usually symmetrical, for ≈US$10–15 a month, with low latency and few outages. The big operators (Digi, Orange, Vodafone) cover the whole city, and a SIM with plenty of data runs ≈US$6–10 a month; 4G works everywhere and 5G covers much of the urban area. Power cuts in the city are rare, and there's no censorship or VPN hassle. Two real caveats: fibre contracts usually run 12–24 months and need an ID document, so for short stays the practical move is using the flat's existing connection — and ask the landlord what speed is actually contracted BEFORE you sign, because older blocks sometimes have a basic plan or the router parked at the far end of the apartment.
CoworkingCoworking
There is a scene, but it's an industry scene, not a nomad one: Iași is one of Romania's software hubs, and most flexible spaces are built for local teams and freelancers rather than someone staying three weeks. You'll find them mainly around the centre and the office buildings in the Palas area, with a monthly hot desk around ≈US$90–150 and private offices well above that. I'm not naming venues because these spaces open and close fast and I'd rather not send you to a dead address — scout them on the ground or ask at the tech meetups. A genuinely popular alternative: the city is full of specialty coffee shops with plugs and decent wifi (coffee ≈US$2–3), and several office buildings rent desks by the month without calling themselves "coworking".
Copou is the classic pick: the university area, leafy, uphill, with a park, students and cafés, and walkable to the centre. Centru / Palas is the most central and the priciest — ideal if you want everything on foot and don't mind bar noise. Păcurari is the sweet spot on price versus location: residential, dense, lots of rentals and well served by tram. Bucium, up on the hill, is the quietest option with newer buildings, but you'll depend on buses or a car. If you want genuinely cheap, Tătărași and Nicolina cost noticeably less and are very local — almost no English in daily life. Watch out for the new blocks in Miroslava and Valea Lupului: they're technically neighbouring communes and the price is tempting, but the rush-hour commute into town stretches out.
ComunidadCommunity
It's a huge university town for its size, so there's social life and young people year-round (except August, when it empties out). Meeting people runs through two channels: the tech world — local developer meetups and software conferences are the easiest way in, and English works fine there — and the student world, since the medical school runs English- and French-taught programmes packed with international students (French, Israeli, Indian, North African), plus a large Moldovan student population. What you will NOT find is a nomad bubble like Lisbon or Medellín: no colivings full of foreigners, no weekly English-language events for newcomers. A proper Spanish-speaking community barely exists — but a lot of Romanians spent years working in Spain or Italy and speak decent Spanish, and since Romanian is a Romance language you'll follow a surprising amount of the written stuff (less of the spoken: there's plenty of Slavic vocabulary). For paperwork, markets and landlords, though: Romanian.
Winter is the real filter: from November to February expect grey skies, snow and routinely sub-zero temperatures, with cold snaps below -10 °C, and heating bills that double or triple — budget those months separately, don't average them away. At the other extreme, July and August bring 35 °C+ heat waves and plenty of older flats have no air conditioning. Second, and this one can genuinely break your plan: now that Romania is fully in Schengen (land borders since January 2025), time spent here counts against the 90-days-in-180 Schengen allowance if you travel on a non-EU passport — it's no longer the "clock reset" it used to be. Romania does have a digital nomad visa, but it requires a high documented monthly income (on the order of several thousand euros, pegged to the national average wage) — confirm the current threshold with the consulate, since it gets updated. Third, money: rents have climbed sharply since 2022 and prices moved again with the 2025 VAT increase, so any figure you read from a couple of years ago will run low. Many landlords quote in euros, ask for one or two months' deposit and prefer short unregistered contracts; get everything in writing and settle up front who pays the building maintenance fee — in winter that is not a minor line. And the logistics bit people underestimate: the airport has cheap flights to Italy, Spain, Germany and the UK, but for many other destinations you'll connect through Bucharest, and the train to Bucharest takes something like six or seven hours.
Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
