It's famous for two very different things: its rice wine —Shaoxing 'huangjiu', a cornerstone of Chinese cooking— and as the hometown of Lu Xun, the country's most influential modern writer. Add stinky tofu, the calligraphy of the Orchid Pavilion and an old-China atmosphere quieter than the big metropolises.
