Its fortified gate is known as the "First Pass Under Heaven" (天下第一关), the great eastern gate that for centuries controlled passage between the northeast and the central plain. A few kilometers south, at Laolongtou — the "Old Dragon's Head" — the wall runs out into the Bohai Sea. It's a historic walled town, today a near-mandatory stop for anyone tracing the wall's eastern end.
