Satu Mare es la capital del județ homónimo, en el extremo noroeste de Rumanía, a un paso de las fronteras con Hungría y Ucrania. Está a orillas del río Someș y tiene una fuerte impronta húngara: buena parte de la población habla húngaro y la ciudad aparece también como Szatmárnémeti. Su centro conserva edificios de estilo secesión (el art nouveau centroeuropeo), plazas amplias y una torre de bomberos que es su símbolo.Satu Mare is the capital of its county, in the far northwest of Romania, right by the Hungarian and Ukrainian borders. It sits on the Someș River and has a strong Hungarian imprint: much of the population speaks Hungarian and the city is also known as Szatmárnémeti. Its center keeps Secession-style buildings (Central European Art Nouveau), wide squares and a firemen's tower that serves as its landmark.
