Santander

Aprox. 182,700 habitantesApprox. 182,700 people

Santander is the capital of Cantabria, on Spain's north coast, facing the Cantabrian Sea. It's a bay city, with seafront promenades, urban beaches like El Sardinero and a mild, damp Atlantic climate: green all year and without the heat of the south. It lives off services, the port and tourism, and in recent years the Centro Botín, designed by Renzo Piano, has put it on the art map. Ideal if you want beach and city at once.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Santander? How much do you need per month in Santander?

Santander works if you want a small, safe, very walkable city on Spain's north coast: ocean, mountains an hour away, excellent food, and first-world internet, without the chaos or the prices of Madrid or Barcelona. It doesn't work if you need a nomad scene — there barely is one: daily life happens in Spanish, you can count the coworkings on one hand, and the international crowd mostly shows up in summer. And it isn't as cheap as people picture "provincial Spain": rents have climbed a good deal in recent years, and in July and August the city turns into a beach resort and prices spike.

This is the strong point, and I'm not overselling it: Spain has some of Europe's best fiber coverage and Santander is well served. You get 300 Mbps to 1 Gbps, usually symmetric, for ≈US$33–45 a month, installed within days, and it doesn't drop — video calls and heavy uploads are a non-issue. Mobile 4G/5G is solid across the city and around the bay, and holds up heading out into Cantabria's villages. No scheduled cuts or chronic blackouts like in other destinations — the exception was the peninsula-wide power outage of April 2025, an isolated event, not the norm. The real catch is contractual: many of the good deals come with a 12-month commitment, so if you're staying three months look for no-commitment plans (they exist) or just rent a flat with fiber already included.

CoworkingCoworking

Small, quiet scene. There are a handful of independent spaces in the center and out toward the University of Cantabria, plus desks and meeting rooms at public business incubators, and the odd hotel with a work area. Flexible monthly passes run ≈US$110–170, a dedicated desk a bit more. Don't trust old internet listings: spaces here open and close often, so confirm the one you liked is still alive before moving for it, and ask for a day pass before paying for a month. Be realistic: if you're coming from Medellín, Lisbon or Mexico City this will feel empty — plenty of people just work from cafés or from home, which with this fiber works perfectly well.

Centro and Puertochico — the most practical: you walk everywhere, the best pintxo bars and the marina are right there, and it's the priciest per square meter. El Sardinero — the beach side, leafy and elegant, great if you want a morning run on the sand; it half hibernates in winter and fills up and gets expensive in summer. Cuatro Caminos and Cazoña — genuinely residential, well connected by bus, more reasonable prices, where a lot of locals actually live. Castilla-Hermida — near the port and the train station, the cheapest part of the urban core, more working-class and less pretty, but functional and about a 15-minute walk from the center. One good thing to note: the city is so walkable you'll barely use the bus except to get up to the higher neighborhoods, and a single ticket costs a little over a dollar.

ComunidadCommunity

Life here happens in Spanish, full stop. Outside tourism and the university, plenty of people aren't comfortable in English, so if you don't handle the language you'll feel isolated fast. The foreign community is small and seasonal: in summer international students arrive for the UIMP courses at the Magdalena palace and the city comes alive; the rest of the year it's a provincial Spanish city, very much its own thing. There is a Latin American community (Colombian, Venezuelan, Peruvian above all) and that makes landing easier. Tech or nomad meetups? Almost none — people go to Bilbao for that, an hour and a half by bus. Meeting people happens the old-fashioned way: the gym, a surf crew, a hiking group, or picking one bar and going back until they greet you by name. Cantabrians are friendly but not effusive; it takes months, not weeks.

Three things a friend would tell you before you book the flight. One: the weather. Northern Spain is not the Spain on the poster. It rains a lot and drizzles even more — the sirimiri can last days — winters are grey and windy, and even in summer you can wake up to clouds. If you need sun to stay sane, this will wear on you. Two: rental seasonality. Santander is a summer resort town: in July and August a lot of flats flip to tourist rentals, long-term supply dries up and prices jump. Arriving in June to look for a place is the worst possible plan; arriving in October, the best. And a warning about the Spanish market generally: many landlords want a Spanish payslip, a permanent contract, even a guarantor, and with a foreign passport and no local contract you'll hear no several times. Budget a deposit plus a month up front, and sometimes an agency fee. Three: paperwork, logistics and euros. If you're not from the EU, Schengen tourism is 90 days out of every 180 and it counts across the whole Schengen area, not just Spain; to stay longer there's Spain's digital nomad visa, but apply early and with advice, because the paperwork is real and the requirements shift. Everything here is paid in euros, so if you earn in dollars the exchange rate can move your budget 10% either way — don't plan to the last cent. And although Santander has an airport, routes are limited and mostly low cost: to fly outside Spain you'll end up going to Bilbao, an hour and a half by bus. The good news: it's a very safe city by anyone's standards, and you can walk almost anywhere at any hour without thinking twice.

Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
