Madrid

Madrid has no beach and no single defining monument, yet it grabs you: pure street-wandering, terrace-sitting and a night that never ends. An open, safe capital with Spain's best food scene at still-human prices. A city to live in, not to photograph.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Madrid? How much do you need per month in Madrid?

Madrid works really well as a base if you're on European hours, want a genuine big-city life (culture, people, flawless transit, an airport that connects to everything) and either speak Spanish or want to be speaking it all day. It doesn't work if you came looking for a bargain: rents have shot up over the past few years and Madrid now sits with the expensive European capitals. Internet and safety are among the best on the continent; the hard part is finding a flat, not living in it. Note that you pay in euros — the dollar figures below are conversions and move with the exchange rate.

This is where Madrid wins hands down. Spain has one of the best fiber footprints in Europe, and in Madrid home fiber is the standard, not a luxury: 300 Mb to 1 Gb symmetric plans for ≈US$35–50 a month, with real upload speed (which matters for video calls and pushing big files). Outages are rare and get fixed fast. Mobile coverage is excellent across the city, including most of the metro network, and plans are cheap: ≈US$15–25 a month gets you plenty of data, less with low-cost carriers. Blackouts aren't a thing here — the Iberian power outage of April 2025 was an exceptional event, not daily life. The one thing to check: in old central buildings the in-flat wiring can be ancient even when fiber reaches the door, so ask whether fiber is already installed inside the flat, and who holds the contract, before you sign.

CoworkingCoworking

Precios: escritorio flexible ≈US$130–200 al mes, escritorio fijo ≈US$180–280, y oficina privada bastante más. Big, mature scene, more local startup and freelance than passing-through nomad, which is a plus: you meet people who actually live here. Impact Hub Madrid (several central locations) is the classic for community and events; Utopicus is the well-known local chain, with nicely designed spaces around the city; and WeWork and Spaces cover the corporate end, with a front desk and meeting rooms. On top of that there are dozens of small neighborhood spaces, usually cheaper and friendlier. Locations open and close often, so check the current address before you commit. Prices: hot desk ≈US$130–200 a month, fixed desk ≈US$180–280, private office quite a bit more. Almost all sell day passes (≈US$20–30) and many give you a free trial day — use it, the difference in atmosphere between places is huge. One warning about working from cafés: it's less of a thing here than in Lisbon or Mexico City, plenty of bars will give you a look if you camp out three hours on one coffee, and many places simply have no outlets.

Malasaña and Chueca: the young center, bars, shops, everything on foot. It's where most people land first, and also the loudest — if you're a light sleeper, avoid the terrace streets. Chamberí: the best balance of central and livable. Elegant without being flashy, wide streets, food markets, a neighborhood of actual residents rather than tourists; it's the area people recommend once they've been here a year, and prices reflect that. La Latina and Lavapiés: old town, squares, Sunday vermouth; Lavapiés is cheaper, far more multicultural and a bit scruffier, with die-hard fans and detractors. Arganzuela and Delicias (along the Madrid Río park): newer buildings that more often have a working elevator and air conditioning, a huge park next door, somewhat lower prices and ten minutes by metro from the center; it's a lot of people's quiet bet. If you genuinely need to save, Tetuán, Cuatro Caminos and Carabanchel are well connected and considerably cheaper.

ComunidadCommunity

One of the easiest cities not to end up alone in. If you speak Spanish you're in from day one: life happens on the street and people genuinely talk to you, without the cool distance of other European capitals. There's a huge Latin American community (Mexican, Colombian, Venezuelan, Argentine, Peruvian), tons of international and grad students, and a tech/startup/freelance event scene with something on most nights between meetups, coworking talks and language exchanges. The thing to adjust to is the clock: lunch around 2 or 2:30pm, dinner at 9:30 or 10pm, and plans starting when you'd be going to bed elsewhere. If you work with the Americas you'll be juggling, and if you're an early riser the first month will be socially awkward. You can survive on English alone within the international circle, but you'll miss half the city.

The hard part of Madrid isn't daily cost, it's landing a flat. The market is brutally tight: group viewings, places gone the same day, landlords asking for a Spanish payslip, a permanent contract and sometimes a bank guarantee, plus one or two months' deposit. As a nomad you'll almost certainly end up on a "seasonal" lease (months-long, furnished, without the protections of a standard residential contract), which costs noticeably more for the same flat — go in knowing that, and never sign anything without seeing the place in person, since remote deposit scams are constant. Second: summer. July and August regularly sit above 35°C and hit 40°C in heat waves, dry heat, and the city empties out in August with many businesses closed; if the flat has no air conditioning you will suffer. Third: paperwork. Without an NIE and padrón registration, opening a bank account and signing up for services is painful, and if you're not from the EU, Schengen tourist entry gives you 90 days out of 180, full stop. The digital nomad visa exists under the Startups Law and requires proving income around 200% of the minimum wage, but that figure is updated yearly and the process changes — confirm it with the consulate before you count on it. Fourth, minor: Madrid is very safe for its size and you can walk almost anywhere at night, but pickpockets around Sol, Gran Vía and the busiest metro lines are a national sport. And one caveat on these numbers: you pay in euros, so every dollar figure here moves with the exchange rate.

Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person.
