San Miguel de Allende is the colonial jewel that charmed half the world: cobbled lanes, the fairy-tale pink Parroquia and a huge artist and expat community. Beautiful to a fault, with a first-rate art, food and rooftop scene — pricey for Mexico, and it knows it.

How much do you need per month in San Miguel de Allende?
San Miguel works if you want a beautiful, calm, walkable base with mild weather most of the year and a huge ready-made foreign community — you show up and you're meeting people within two weeks. It doesn't work if you came looking for "cheap Mexico" or a tech nomad scene: it's a dollarized tourist town where rent and dinner cost more than in Mexico City, and there are far more retirees and artists than laptop thirty-somethings. Add that it has no airport of its own (≈1 hour to Querétaro, ≈1.5 hours to León) and the cobblestones punish you if you have any mobility issues.

Bastante extranjero con trabajo crítico acaba poniendo Starlink como plan B.Telmex (Infinitum) reaches basically the whole town and is the safe bet; Totalplay has been rolling out fiber block by block, so ask street by street before you sign a lease. A typical home plan runs 50–200 Mbps for ≈US$20–40 a month — plenty for video calls, though if you end up on copper instead of fiber the upload is thin and you'll feel it when screen-sharing. The local twist is colonial construction: the stone and adobe walls downtown eat WiFi, so if the router sits in another room you'll suffer — ask for an ethernet run or a mesh extender. Telcel mobile coverage is solid in town and works as a hotspot backup (AT&T and Movistar work, but Telcel is the most reliable across the Bajío). During rainy season (June–September) afternoon storms knock the power out now and then; if you live on calls, keep a battery and mobile data ready. Plenty of foreigners with mission-critical work end up adding Starlink as plan B.
CoworkingCoworking
The scene exists but it's small: a handful of coworkings, mostly converted colonial houses with a courtyard and a few dozen desks, and a flexible monthly hot desk runs about ≈US$100–200 (private offices considerably more). I won't name places because they open and close often — ask in the expat groups once you land. Don't expect Mexico City or Medellín startup energy: the crowd is consultants, writers, real-estate people and the odd solo founder. In practice a lot of people work from cafés with decent WiFi in Centro and San Antonio, though in high season they fill with tourists and the noise wins. If your job is wall-to-wall calls, the coworking pays for itself.
Centro is the postcard: everything on foot, the Parroquia, the best cafés and restaurants. It's also the priciest, noisiest and most Airbnb-saturated. San Antonio, just south, is the favorite of younger foreigners: 15–20 minutes' walk to the center, bakeries and yoga studios, and rent drops a notch. Guadalupe is the murals-and-galleries neighborhood, with the most mixed Mexican-foreign crowd and friendlier prices; at night stick to streets you already know. Los Frailes, on the outskirts, is bigger houses with a garden and parking — good if you're a couple or have a dog, but there you really do need a car.
ComunidadCommunity
It's one of the easiest places in Mexico to meet people: thousands of American and Canadian residents, classes, workshops, hiking groups, community dinners, and a bilingual public library that doubles as the town's social hub. The downside is the flip side of the same coin: you can live here a year without speaking Spanish, because in the center and the expat scene everything happens in English — and a big chunk of that community is 20 or 30 years older than you. If you want Mexicans your own age, you have to step outside the gringo circuit on purpose: markets, neighborhood gyms, events in Guadalupe and San Antonio.
First: this is not cheap Mexico. San Miguel is dollarized and plenty of landlords quote in USD; what you'll be offered is mostly short Airbnb-style stays, and the good annual leases come from asking in person and through referrals, not from the internet — budget for a month or two short-term while you hunt for something real. Second, the cobblestones: gorgeous, and torture with a suitcase, in heels, with a bad knee or pushing a stroller — plus you're at ≈1,900 m, so the first hills will wind you. Third, the noise: fireworks and church bells start before dawn and are not negotiable — if you're a light sleeper, check how close you are to a church before you sign. Fourth, the weather: April and May are dry and hot, and from June to September it rains hard most afternoons. Tap water is extremely hard: everyone drinks from jugs and you'll see limescale on everything. On safety, the town itself feels calm and people do walk at night in the central areas, but Guanajuato has spent years among the states with the most homicides in Mexico (concentrated in Celaya, Irapuato, León and Salamanca, not here): don't drive highways after dark, and don't let the crowd of foreigners lull you. And if you're staying more than six months, sort out your immigration status properly — entering as a tourist and "renewing" with a border run is no longer a reliable plan; the immigration officer grants whatever they want and can hand you 30 days.
Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
