Mexico City can't be seen in a weekend, and that's the hook: it's North America's food, museum and nightlife capital, at 2,240 m above sea level with mild weather almost year-round. You walk it by neighborhoods, not by 'attractions'. Cheap for what it offers, and since the pandemic, one of the continent's biggest nomad hubs.

How much do you need per month in Ciudad de México?
Mexico City works if you want a genuinely huge capital: incredible food at every price point, endless culture, cheap flights across most of the continent, and a time zone that lines up with the US. What it isn't anymore is cheap in the colonias where most nomads land — Roma and Condesa have gotten dramatically more expensive since 2020, and a furnished rental there now competes with Spanish cities. It's not your base if you want quiet, clean air, or a backpacker budget, and even less so if you're not willing to pick up some Spanish.

Home connectivity is among the best in Latin America: Totalplay, Izzi and Telmex cover the central colonias well with 100–500 Mbps plans for ≈US$25–40 a month, and latency for video calls is solid. Watch the upload, though: only true fiber (Totalplay, and Telmex where it has been upgraded) gives you decent upstream; cable plans are heavily asymmetric and it shows if you stream or push big files. Telcel's mobile coverage is strong across most of the city, with signal in much of the Metro. The real caveats: during rainy season afternoon storms knock service out for a while, and in older Roma/Condesa buildings the internal wiring is often the bottleneck — ask which provider is already installed BEFORE you sign, because getting a new line can take weeks. No systematic blackouts, no censorship.
CoworkingCoworking
The scene is one of the biggest on the continent and covers every tier: international chains like WeWork with several locations along Reforma and Insurgentes, local spaces like Impact Hub around Roma and the center, and dozens of small neighborhood options in Roma, Condesa, Juárez and Polanco. A hot desk runs ≈US$150–250 a month depending on area and perks; a private office is quite a bit more, and you can almost always buy a single day pass before committing. There's also a strong café-working culture — Blend Station in Condesa is the classic laptop-friendly spot — but several trendy cafés now restrict laptops on weekends or at lunch. If you're on calls all day, pay for coworking: old apartments have thin walls and the street is loud.
Roma Norte and Condesa are the nomad epicenter: walkable, tree-lined, packed with cafés and restaurants — and therefore the priciest and the most saturated with foreigners. Juárez (next to Zona Rosa) is just as central, a bit cheaper and grittier. Escandón, Narvarte and Del Valle are the smart play: 15–25 minutes on foot or by bike from Roma, noticeably lower rents and real neighborhood life. Coyoacán and San Ángel are for people who want calm, colonial houses and trees, accepting that you're far from everything else and that traffic heading north across the city is brutal.
ComunidadCommunity
Meeting people is easy: there's a huge foreign community, tech and startup meetups almost weekly, running and cycling events (Reforma's Sunday car-free ride is a classic way to make friends), and language exchanges everywhere. In Roma and Condesa you can get by on English alone for a long time — which is exactly the risk: you end up in an expat bubble. The actual day-to-day language is Spanish, and the city genuinely opens up when you speak it — with the doctor, the landlord, the market, the people who've lived here their whole lives.
What a friend would tell you: first, there's real resentment toward gentrification, and there have been protests aimed explicitly at digital nomads in Roma and Condesa. It's not personal danger, but showing up loud in English and paying rent in dollars has social consequences — learn Spanish, spend at neighborhood businesses, don't be the one driving prices up. Second, safety is zone- and time-dependent: downtown and the nomad colonias are fine to walk by day, but never hail a street taxi (use Uber or Didi), watch your phone on the Metro at night, and don't wander alone at 3am in areas you don't know. Third, water: many colonias face rationing and shortages — ask whether the building has a cistern and how it gets refilled before you rent. Fourth, this is a genuine earthquake zone — ask the building's age and whether it had a post-2017 structural review. Fifth, your visa: Mexico allows up to 180 tourist days, but for years now the INM officer decides at the airport and getting 30, 60 or 90 days is common; don't plan half a year assuming you'll be stamped for it, and note there's no digital nomad visa as such (the long-stay route is temporary residency, applied for at a Mexican consulate outside the country with proof of income). Add the altitude (2,240 m — your first week will be rough), the May-to-October rainy season with afternoon storms and occasional flooding, bad air with pollution alerts mostly in spring, and the fact that every dollar figure here moves with the exchange rate — the peso has swung a lot in recent years, so check prices in pesos when you land.
Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
