San Luis Potosí

Aprox. 722,772 habitantesApprox. 722,772 people

San Luis Potosí is a colonial city on Mexico's central highlands, around 1,860 m up, with a pink-stone historic center that's part of the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro (a World Heritage route). Founded in the 16th century on silver, it's now a state capital and industrial hub, but its old quarter keeps plazas, baroque churches and theaters from another age. The climate is dry and mild most of the year. It's less touristy than it deserves: pretty, walkable and with a strong cuisine of its own. It's also the natural gateway to the Huasteca Potosina and the desert of Real de Catorce.

How much do you need per month in San Luis Potosí?

San Luis Potosí works if you want a cheap, calm, thoroughly Mexican base to actually get work done: a gorgeous walkable historic center, dry highland weather, decent fiber, and some of the lowest costs among mid-sized cities in central Mexico. It doesn't work if you want a nomad scene — the foreigners here are engineers at the car plants, not laptop people, and daily life happens in Spanish. Add that it's a car city, nowhere near a beach, with an airport that has few routes: this is a place to settle in and produce, not to hop out of every weekend.

Fiber is well sorted inside the city: Telmex, Totalplay, Izzi and Megacable cover most neighborhoods, and a 100-300 Mbps plan runs ≈US$25-40 a month. Video calls and big uploads are a non-issue. Getting a line in your own name requires ID and proof of address and usually takes days, so with a furnished rental you want it already included — and test the real speed before you sign. On mobile, Telcel is the most reliable and already has 5G across much of the city; AT&T is fine in central areas and gets patchy toward the edges and the highway. There are no systematic blackouts, but you'll get short outages during summer storms — a cheap UPS for your modem pays for itself. The utility that genuinely fails here is water, not electricity.

CoworkingCoworking

Small, locally oriented scene: the coworkings here live off Potosino startups, freelancers and automotive-industry suppliers, not passing nomads. You'll mostly find serviced offices and shared spaces along the Av. Salvador Nava corridor and the Sierra Leona/Lomas area, plus scrappier options near the historic center and the university side of town. A hot-desk monthly runs ≈US$90-180 and day passes ≈US$7-12, though it varies a lot between spaces. Names turn over often — places open and close — so don't commit to a list you found online: ask once you're there, or in the local Facebook groups. Plenty of people end up working from specialty cafés downtown and around Lomas: good wifi and cheap, but they close early and almost none are built for you to camp six hours.

Centro Histórico — the prettiest part and the only genuinely walkable one: plazas, cafés, cheap rent. The trade-off is old buildings with questionable wiring and plumbing, bar and traffic noise, and no big supermarket nearby. Lomas (1st through 4th sección) — the traditional well-off area, leafy and quiet, with restaurants and supermarkets along Av. Salvador Nava; it's where you'll feel most comfortable and safe, but without a car or DiDi you'll be bored. Tequisquiapan and the area around Parque Tangamanga I — genuinely middle-class, good value, and the city's best park at your door for running or biking. Villa Magna / Lomas del Tecnológico and the new west side — recent developments and apartment complexes out toward Highway 57, where a lot of the industry crowd lives; comfortable and modern, but entirely car-dependent with no street life.

ComunidadCommunity

No esperes comunidad nómada: aquí prácticamente no existe. Don't expect a nomad community: there basically isn't one. The foreign population is corporate — mostly Germans, Americans and Japanese tied to BMW, General Motors and their suppliers — and it moves in closed circuits of company and international school. Daily life is in Spanish, and English runs out the moment you step outside the corporate bubble: if you can't hold a conversation in Spanish, you'll be isolated. What does work for meeting people is the usual Mexican route: the gym, the running and cycling groups at Parque Tangamanga, dance or climbing classes, and university life (UASLP, Tec de Monterrey's SLP campus). Potosinos have a reputation for being warm and polite, but social life revolves around family and lifelong friends — they'll treat you well from day one and actually let you in around month three.

Water is the real problem here, not internet. San Luis lives with chronic water stress and several neighborhoods are on rationing — water arrives for a few hours, or on certain days. Before you sign, ask straight out: is there a cistern and roof tank, and how often does water actually reach this building? Second: renting without a guarantor is the classic friction. Many landlords want a co-signer who owns property in the city plus a 12-month contract; as a foreigner expect to be asked for several months' deposit or to go through an agency, and 1-3 month stays are realistically only furnished places or monthly Airbnbs (pricier than the numbers above). Third, the weather fools people: you're at ~1,850 m, so April and May hit dry and hard, and December-January nights get genuinely cold in houses with no heating — your gas bill climbs. Fourth, safety: this is one of the calmer cities in central-northern Mexico and the historic center is fine to walk at night, but use normal judgment by area and avoid driving Highway 57 after dark. And watch the tourist permit: although the law allows up to 180 days, immigration has for years been granting 30, 60 or 90 at their discretion — don't build a six-month plan assuming the long stamp.

Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person.
