Puerto Montt
Aprox. 160,054 habitantesApprox. 160,054 people
Puerto Montt is the gateway to Chilean Patagonia: capital of the Los Lagos Region, it sits at the head of the Reloncaví Sound, where the mainland begins to break up into fjords, channels and islands. Ferries sail from here down the channels toward Puerto Natales, and boats cross to Chiloé. It was founded by German settlers in the mid-19th century, a heritage visible in the area's architecture. Its soul is in Angelmó, the fishermen's cove-neighborhood where you eat the best seafood and the legendary curanto. It rains most of the year.
Mejor épocaBest time
The southern summer (December to March) is the best window: long days, less rain and the season for ferries and Patagonian trips. The rest of the year is cool and very wet.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Puerto Montt? How much do you need per month in Puerto Montt?
Puerto Montt works as a logistics base for southern Chile more than as a destination in itself: an airport (El Tepual) with daily flights to Santiago, the starting point of the Carretera Austral, the port for ferries into Patagonia (Chaitén, Puerto Chacabuco) and for the Navimag ship to Puerto Natales, plus some of the best fiber in Latin America and rents well below the capital. It doesn't work if you want sun, a ready-made nomad scene, or a pretty city: this is an industrial port — the hub of Chile's salmon industry — grey, windy, and rained on most of the year, and Chile is still expensive by Latin American standards, especially at the supermarket. Be honest with yourself: a good share of the foreigners who stay for months in this area end up living in Puerto Varas, 20 minutes north, and use Puerto Montt for the airport, the hospital and paperwork.

This is the city's best surprise: Chile leads Latin America on fiber and the south is well covered. In the urban area you'll find 300–600 Mbps plans for ≈US$25–35 a month with GTD/Telsur (the historic southern operator), Mundo, Movistar, Entel or ClaroVTR, installed within days, with stable latency for video calls. Mobile 4G is good across the city, there's 5G in parts of it, and data is cheap. The weak point isn't the cable, it's the power: winter wind-and-rain storms knock out electricity for hours in some sectors, so if your work depends on being online, keep backup power (a small UPS for the router) and mobile data on a second carrier as plan B. And something important if you'll travel around the region: as soon as you head out toward the Carretera Austral or rural areas, signal drops fast and disappears entirely for long stretches — don't schedule calls "from the road". Activating a prepaid SIM requires ID (passport or Chilean RUT), so bring your documents to the store.
CoworkingCoworking
A small, local scene, not a nomad one: the few spaces around serve city professionals, salmon-industry consultants and regional startups rather than passing foreigners. Expect roughly ≈US$100–180 a month for a hot desk, with day passes available; I'm deliberately not giving you names, because in a city this size spaces open and close often and I'd rather you check on arrival than show up at a dead address. In practice most people work from home or from cafés: there's decent specialty coffee (≈US$3–4.50 a cup) with wifi and outlets downtown and along the waterfront, though the places are small and fill up at lunchtime. If coworking really matters to you, look at Puerto Varas too: the scene there is a bit livelier thanks to tourism and the foreign presence, and the bus between the two cities takes 20–30 minutes.
Downtown and the costanera (the Av. Diego Portales strip) is the most practical: you walk to banks, the mall, the bus terminal and offices, with a view over the Reloncaví sound — in exchange it's noisy, traffic-heavy, and pretty dead at night. Pelluco, east along the coast, is the most sought-after residential area: beach, seafood restaurants, quieter, with better new apartments; you'll need a bus or car for most things. Mirasol, to the west, is the big middle-class residential sector with supermarkets, shops and lower prices, but no charm and a bit disconnected if you don't drive. And the honest answer for most foreigners: Puerto Varas, about 20 km away on Lake Llanquihue, facing the Osorno volcano, with cafés, better-kept rentals and an outsider crowd — pricier than Puerto Montt and considerably nicer to live in. Don't settle in Alerce sight unseen: it's a satellite sector far from the center, grown on mass social housing, cheap but poorly connected and with a bad safety reputation.
ComunidadCommunity
There's no nomad community to speak of: the foreigners living here came for work — aquaculture and salmon farming (Norwegian companies included), tourism, healthcare, universities — or they're travelers passing through toward Chiloé and Patagonia who stay two nights and move on. That means daily life is 100% in Spanish, and in the hardest Spanish on the continent: a southern accent, spoken fast, full of "po", "cachai", "al tiro" and Chilote slang; English shows up in tourism and the corporate salmon world, not on the street. Southern Chileans are warm but reserved and keep their lifelong circles, so making friends takes time and almost never happens through a meetup — there are few — but through activities: hiking, kayaking, fishing, football, classes, the university. The more foreigner-flavored social life is in Puerto Varas, and it multiplies in summer with everyone heading into Patagonia. If you want instant community, this isn't your city.
The weather is what decides whether you last or leave. Rainfall runs on the order of 1,800–2,000 mm a year spread across most months — there's no "rainy season" you can dodge — the wind blows, and winter is grey and dark: in June the sun comes up around 8:40 and it's night before 6 p.m. People underestimate what that does to their mood and their output; in summer, by contrast, there's light past 9 p.m. and the region is spectacular. Second, the air: in winter much of the city heats with firewood and you can smell the smoke (less than Temuco or Coyhaique, since the wind helps here, but it's there) — if you're asthmatic, factor it in, and budget for heating, which is not optional. Third, renting: formal leases want a Chilean RUT, a deposit, and sometimes a guarantor and proof of income, so without a RUT you end up paying short-term furnished prices; and in January–February short rentals spike because all of Patagonia passes through here. Fourth, safety: it's generally a calm city by Chilean standards, but watch for opportunistic theft downtown, at the bus terminal and around Angelmó, and at night in outlying sectors. Fifth, geology: this is serious earthquake country — the 1960 quake, the largest ever recorded worldwide, ruptured this whole stretch of southern Chile and this area sat inside the affected zone — with active volcanoes nearby; Calbuco erupted in 2015 and dusted the area with ash. Sixth, the currency: everything is billed in Chilean pesos, and the peso has swung roughly between 800 and 1,050 per dollar in recent years, so these USD figures are a reference, not a promise — convert them at the day's rate before you commit. On visas: most Western passports enter as tourists for up to 90 days (check your nationality) and Chile has no widely used digital nomad visa; the alternatives are temporary residence visas with their own requirements, so confirm your case with the Servicio Nacional de Migraciones before planning a longer stay.
Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
