Antofagasta

Aprox. 309,832 habitantesApprox. 309,832 people

Antofagasta is the big city of northern Chile, a port on the Pacific wedged between the sea and the Atacama Desert, the driest in the world. It runs on mining—the region's copper ships out from here—giving it a practical, working feel more than a touristy one. Its real draw is the surrounding landscape: cliffs, remarkably clear skies and the pierced rock of La Portada to the north. The old harbor quarter keeps buildings from the saltpeter era.

Mejor épocaBest time

Cualquier mes funciona. The coastal desert climate is mild and stable almost year-round, with very little rain. Coastal mornings can start cloudy (the 'camanchaca' fog) and clear by midday. Any month works.

PresupuestoBudget

Chile is among South America's pricier countries, and Antofagasta, a mining city, has high lodging costs driven by work demand. Eating is more reasonable, especially fresh fish and seafood.

EntradaEntry

Andrés Sabella airport connects to Santiago. In town there are buses and shared taxis; for La Portada and the outlying beaches a car or tour helps, as they sit outside the city.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Antofagasta? How much do you need per month in Antofagasta?

Antofagasta works if your reason for being in Chile is work: mining, engineering, energy, desert projects. As a pure nomad base it's weak and expensive — mining salaries pushed rents up, there's no nomad scene, and the city is built around cars and shift work, not laptops. The upside is real though: top-tier Chilean internet, zero rain, the ocean right there, and a tidy, functional city.

This is where Chile plays in another league: home fiber is among the best in Latin America and Antofagasta is well covered downtown and across the newer residential sectors. Plans of 200–600 Mbps run ≈US$25–35 a month, with stable latency for video calls; some providers sell symmetric, others don't — ask about upload speed before signing if you stream or push big files. Mobile 4G is solid and 5G already covers much of the city; head out onto the desert highway and it drops fast. The power grid is stable — you're not living around blackouts. If you rent furnished, ask whether internet is included and with which provider: some older downtown buildings are served by only one company.

CoworkingCoworking

Don't expect a Medellín- or Mexico City-style coworking scene: the ecosystem here revolves around mining, the university and corporate offices, not laptop nomads. There are a few spaces and innovation hubs tied to the mining sector and university life, but they're scarce, often filled by project teams, and don't always sell month-to-month memberships. I'd rather not give you names I can't vouch for — track them down once you're there and ask directly about flex desks. Budget ≈US$100–180 a month and have a plan B: plenty of people end up working from mall cafés, hotel lobbies, or straight from the apartment, which with that fiber works perfectly.

Downtown, around Plaza Colón, is the most walkable part: banks, paperwork, restaurants and buses to everywhere; the trade-off is older buildings and noise. The south side, with neighborhoods like Jardines del Sur and Coviefi, is where much of the professional class lives: newer apartments, supermarkets, a mall nearby and access to the city's southern beaches — the obvious pick if you're staying for months. To the north, the La Chimba area mixes newer housing with commerce and industry, somewhat cheaper but fully dependent on transport. And anything along the coastal road and Avenida Grecia costs more for the view and the beach access.

ComunidadCommunity

Nomad community: essentially zero. What does exist is a huge floating population of outsiders: Chilean engineers and technicians on 7x7 or 4x3 shift rotations, expats from mining companies, and a large migrant community of Colombians, Venezuelans, Bolivians and Peruvians that keeps half the city's commerce running. You meet people through work, the gym, the ocean or the weekend barbecue — not through meetups. Daily life is 100% Chilean Spanish: fast, full of slang and "po" tacked onto everything; even coming from another Spanish-speaking country it'll take a few weeks to tune your ear. Functional English lives almost entirely inside the mining corporate bubble.

The expense is not a rumor: Antofagasta carries a reputation as one of Chile's pricier cities because mining salaries dragged rents — and groceries — upward, and you get noticeably less city for that money than in Santiago or Valparaíso. Add that water here is scarce and hard, with part of the supply desalinated, so the utility bill and bottled water weigh more than you'd expect. To rent properly you'll be asked for a one-year contract, a deposit plus a month upfront, and very likely a Chilean RUT and proof of income: if you arrive on a tourist stamp (90 days for many nationalities, but not all — check yours before booking), the realistic route is a furnished seasonal rental, and stretching that stay with quick border runs is a game immigration looks on ever less kindly. It never rains, but the sun is no joke: UV radiation in northern Chile is among the highest on the planet — take protection seriously — and get ready for the camanchaca, the coastal fog that swallows the mornings. This is a seismic coastal zone with tsunami evacuation protocols: find your evacuation route on day one, that's not local paranoia. On safety, the city changes a lot by sector — downtown and the coastal strip are fine in daylight, but ask locals before taking a cheap apartment in a hillside or outlying sector, and don't wander alone at night in areas you don't know.

Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person.
