Though administratively its own city, it's part of the Athens metropolitan area and linked to the centre by metro line 1. It's the departure point for nearly every ferry to the Aegean islands (Cyclades, Dodecanese, Crete and more), so most travelers pass through it. But it has a life of its own: marinas like Mikrolimano and Pasalimani, hills with views, and a seafaring and Asia Minor refugee heritage that shaped its music (rebetiko) and its character.
