In the 11th and 12th centuries it was a seat of Polish ducal power, and its cathedral holds the tombs of medieval monarchs like Władysław Herman and Bolesław III. Today that heritage coexists with the large Orlen oil refinery and petrochemical complex, the city's economic engine. The view of the Vistula from the cathedral hill is among the finest in central Poland.
