Łódź

Aprox. 768,755 habitantesApprox. 768,755 people

That industrial past defines its character: red-brick factories turned into new uses, textile-baron mansions, and a spectacular central avenue, Piotrkowska Street, one of the longest commercial streets in Europe, lined with murals and bars over nearly four kilometers. The old Poznański mill is now Manufaktura, a huge cultural and retail complex. Łódź is also the home of Polish cinema: its legendary Film School produced Polański, Kieślowski and Wajda.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Łódź?How much do you need per month in Łódź?

No funciona si buscas una escena nómada grande, clima amable o vivir en inglés: el invierno es gris y oscuro de noviembre a marzo, y fuera del centro casi todo pasa en polaco.Łódź is the "big Polish city at small-city prices" play: you can live right downtown for what buys you a room in Warsaw, with first-world internet, trams everywhere and Warsaw 1h20–1h30 away by train. It works if you're remote, don't mind being on your own for a while, and like things post-industrial, raw and cheap. It doesn't work if you want a big nomad scene, kind weather, or to live in English — winters are gray and dark from November to March, and outside the center daily life runs in Polish.

One of the city's real strengths. Polish fiber is fast and cheap: 300–600 Mbps for ≈US$16–25 a month, and gigabit plans aren't much dearer. The catch is the building, not the city — the old kamienice tenements downtown aren't always wired for fiber, and sometimes only coax cable or DSL reaches them. Ask BEFORE you sign a lease, and have the landlord run a speed test inside the actual flat. Mobile is just as good: solid 4G and 5G citywide on Play, Orange, T-Mobile or Plus, with big-data plans for ≈US$8–15 a month. No rolling blackouts, no censorship, no need for a VPN. Video calls are a non-issue.

CoworkingCoworking

Small but real. It clusters downtown: the OFF Piotrkowska creative complex (the converted factory yard at Piotrkowska 138/140) and the newer office buildings by Łódź Fabryczna station and the EC1 center. Don't expect the Warsaw or Kraków menu — there are only a handful of spaces, and they live off local startups, freelancers and studios, so the day-to-day language is Polish (English shows up as soon as you ask). Hot desk runs ≈US$100–180 a month; dedicated desks and private offices cost noticeably more. Plenty of remote workers just camp in the specialty cafés along Piotrkowska, which have decent wifi and outlets. I'm deliberately not naming spaces: Łódź coworkings open, close and reprice often, and you're better off confirming the specific place once you're there than booking blind off an old recommendation.

Bałuty, al norte, es lo más barato y también lo más desparejo: hay calles perfectamente normales y otras que no lo son — ve a verlas de día y de noche antes de decidir.Śródmieście is the center and where most foreigners land: everything that matters is walkable from Piotrkowska, the long commercial street that cuts through the city, and trams go everywhere. Stare Polesie, just west of downtown, is the trendier pick: half-restored period tenements, bars, slightly lower rents and a genuine neighborhood feel. Around Manufaktura and the New Center of Łódź (next to Fabryczna station and EC1) you get new-build flats with elevators and parking — pricier and more anonymous, but the most move-in-ready option. If you want to spend little and don't mind 1980s blocks, look at Retkinia (west) or Widzew (east): good tram links and clearly cheaper rents. Bałuty, to the north, is the cheapest and the most uneven — some streets are perfectly ordinary, others aren't. Walk them by day and by night before you commit.

ComunidadCommunity

It's a huge university city (University of Łódź, the Technical University, the Medical University with its English-language program, and the legendary Film School), so there are plenty of international students and an Erasmus scene, mostly September to June. But the grown-up nomad and expat community is small compared with Warsaw or Kraków: you'll find mainly IT and tech meetups, in Polish or English, and not much beyond that. Spanish speakers are scarce; the Ukrainian community, on the other hand, has been large since 2022, and you'll hear Ukrainian and Russian daily. Under-35s generally speak good English; above that, assume nothing — learn a few Polish courtesies, it genuinely helps. Making friends here takes months, not weeks, and winter is antisocial: if you arrive in November, build a deliberate habit of going out.

Five things a friend would tell you before you sign. One: the listed price is NOT what you pay. Polish rent splits into czynsz najmu (what the landlord takes) plus czynsz administracyjny (the building fee) plus media (utilities), and the real total can run 30–40% above the advertised figure — always ask about all three before you compare listings. You'll also need a kaucja (deposit) of one or two months, and some contracts are "najem okazjonalny", which requires a notarized statement and an alternative address you could move to — a headache if you've just landed. Two: winter. In mid-December the sun sets around 3:30pm, and Poland has a genuine smog problem from coal heating in old houses and kamienice; in Łódź there are neighborhoods where you can smell it in January. If you're sensitive, budget for an air purifier and ask how the building is heated. Three: the city is half-renovated — beautiful blocks sitting next to derelict ones, plus ongoing rehab works and their noise. Violent crime is low, but at night avoid dark inner courtyards (podwórka) and groups that are well into the evening; standard big-city judgment applies. Four: everything is paid in złoty, not euros (cards and BLIK work almost everywhere, so you barely need cash), which means the dollar figures above move with the exchange rate — use them to compare cities, not as a to-the-cent budget. Five: as far as I know, Poland has never had its own digital nomad visa. If you're not an EU citizen you enter as a Schengen tourist, 90 days in any 180-day window, and a trip to Germany or Czechia resets nothing; staying longer means a national visa or a temporary residence permit. Confirm your own situation with the consulate before committing to a long lease.

Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
