Oujda
Aprox. 405,253 habitantesApprox. 405,253 people
Oujda is the major city of Morocco's far northeast, capital of the Oriental region and just a few kilometers from the Algerian border. For centuries it was the gateway between Morocco and the Algerian world, and that border position shapes its character, its food and its music (it's a home of gharnati and of the raï that crosses the frontier). It's an inland city, with a walled medina and a far less touristy life than Fez or Marrakech; travelers who come here are after exactly that eastern Morocco, more authentic and less trodden.
Mejor épocaBest time
Spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) are ideal: pleasant temperatures in a semi-arid zone. Summer is very hot and dry, typical of the interior; winter is cool, with cold nights due to the eastern plateau's altitude.
PresupuestoBudget
Morocco is cheap in dollars and euros, and Oujda even more so as it isn't a mass destination: food, lodging and transport are very local. A good place to stretch your budget away from the tourist prices of the country's west.
EntradaEntry
Morocco waives visas for many nationalities (Europeans, Americans, among others) for stays up to 90 days. Check the rule for your passport. The land border with Algeria has been closed for years.
Cómo moverteGetting around
