Ostrava
Aprox. 313,088 habitantesApprox. 313,088 people
Ostrava is the Czech Republic's third city, in the Moravian-Silesian region near the Polish border. It was the country's industrial heart, coal and steel, and now reinvents that past: the former Dolní Vítkovice ironworks is a cultural hub topped by the Bolt Tower viewpoint. It's known for Stodolní Street, the nightlife epicenter, and the Colours of Ostrava festival. Raw, real and cheap, it's the opposite of postcard Prague.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Ostrava? How much do you need per month in Ostrava?
It works if you're coming to work heads-down, actually save money, and use it as a base camp for Czechia, Poland, and Slovakia. It works badly if you want a nomad scene: this is a post-industrial coal-and-steel city, winter is long and gray, regional air quality is among Europe's worst, and there's no ready-made expat community waiting for you — you'd have to build it.

Internet y señalInternet & signal
Aquí no vas a sufrir. You won't suffer here. Czechia has solid fixed infrastructure at low prices: in Ostrava the normal setup is 250–1,000 Mbps for ≈US$18–28 a month, with decent upload, low latency, and rare outages. No blackouts, no scheduled cuts, no censorship, no VPN needed just to browse. Mobile is fine too: 4G citywide and 5G across much of it, though Czech plans remain among the priciest in the EU — budget ≈US$12–30 a month for generous data. The caveat is the building, not the city: the technology depends on the exact address. In many panelák blocks and older houses the line is coax cable, VDSL, or even a local wireless ISP (Czechia has plenty of WISPs) rather than fiber to the flat — fine for video calls, but don't assume gigabit. And getting a new line installed in your name can take weeks and usually comes with a lock-in contract. On short-term rentals, ask for a speedtest screenshot taken INSIDE the flat before you pay.
CoworkingCoworking
A small, honest scene: Ostrava is Czechia's third city and does have IT and shared-services work — corporate campuses, the science-and-technology park, and the VŠB technical university in Poruba feeding it — but don't expect Prague or Brno density. There are a handful of coworkings and flexible offices, mostly downtown and around the newer office cluster by Karolina; Impact Hub has had a presence in Ostrava and is the most recognizable name, but confirm it's still open before counting on it. I won't name more blind: small spaces open and close often, so filter them on the map when you land and ask for a trial day before paying for a month. A monthly hot desk runs ≈US$90–180, about as cheap as it gets in the EU. And the practical truth: because rent is so low, plenty of people here just work from home in a big flat and use downtown cafés to get out of the house.
Moravská Ostrava a Přívoz is the center and the default if you want to walk everywhere: Masarykovo náměstí, cafés, Stodolní street (the bar strip), trams to anywhere. It's the priciest part of town, which here still means cheap; the real cost is weekend noise if you land right by Stodolní, and the fact that the northern end, around Ostrava-Přívoz station, feels noticeably rougher. Poruba is the safe bet for a multi-month stay: an entire district planned in the 1950s in sorela (socialist-realist) style, surprisingly green and orderly, with the technical university, real neighborhood life and lower rents; the center is roughly 20-30 minutes by tram. Ostrava-Jih (Zábřeh, Hrabůvka, Dubina) is the city's largest housing-estate area: not pretty, very functional, the cheapest well-connected option, ideal if saving is the point. Slezská Ostrava and Mariánské Hory sit in between: residential, quieter, with less furnished stock. Vítkovice holds the country's best industrial heritage (Dolní Vítkovice, the old ironworks turned cultural complex), but it changes a lot street by street — worth walking it before renting sight unseen.
ComunidadCommunity
Be honest with yourself: there's no ready-made nomad community here. Ostrava has two large universities (VŠB technical in Poruba and the University of Ostrava) with exchange students, an IT and shared-services sector with some foreign staff, and sizable Slovak, Polish and Ukrainian communities thanks to proximity and history — but Spanish speakers are very few, and there's no neighborhood or circuit where you'd find them. Tech meetups exist but are far less frequent than in Prague or Brno; the year's high point is the Colours of Ostrava festival in July, at the Dolní Vítkovice complex, which fills the city. English works with younger people, in cafés, coworkings and around the university, but drops off fast beyond that: in shops, government offices, or with older landlords you'll need Czech or a lot of translation app. Note the accent: the Ostrava dialect (clipped vowels, its own slang) is famous nationwide and trips up even Praguers. The upside is that people here have a well-earned reputation for being blunt and unpretentious; if you stay and keep showing up in the same places, you get in.
Warning number one is the air. Ostrava and the wider Moravian-Silesian region carry some of the European Union's worst readings for particulate matter and benzo(a)pyrene: a legacy of local heavy industry, coal heating in the surrounding towns, and Polish Silesia just across the border. The worst days are cold, windless winter ones with a temperature inversion: the air sits still and you feel it. Industrial activity in the area has declined in recent years and that helped somewhat, but the structural problem is still there. Pollution isn't uniform across the city either: the districts hugging the industrial belt to the east and southeast (Radvanice-Bartovice is the most-cited case) measure worse than Poruba, out west. If you have asthma, allergies, or small kids, check an air-quality app and the Czech meteorological institute's (ČHMÚ) data before committing to a full winter. Second, winter itself: from November to February it gets dark around 4pm and the sky stays gray for weeks; it breaks more people than admit it. Third, rent: the listed price is almost never what you pay — add heating, electricity, gas and the building fee, always ask what's included, and expect one to two months' deposit. Furnished short-term stock is thin; the market is built for one-year Czech-language leases, and you shouldn't sign one without a translation. Fourth, paperwork: non-EU citizens run on Schengen's 90-days-in-180, and that clock covers the whole zone, not just Czechia. Staying longer means a long-stay visa — the classic route is self-employment with a živnostenský list (trade license), slow and in Czech. Czechia also opened a digital-nomad-style program, but it's limited to a handful of nationalities and mostly tech profiles, and it does not cover most Latin American countries: check YOUR case with the consulate, not with a blog. Fifth, every dollar figure here is converted from crowns (it has hovered around ≈21–23 CZK to the dollar, but it moves): if the exchange rate shifts, so does your budget. And three practical things: Ostrava's airport (Mošnov) is small with few routes, so cheap flying means Katowice, Kraków, or Prague; the city sits in the Odra river basin and the region has had serious floods (1997, and again in September 2024), so ask about the area if the flat is on a ground floor near the river; and Ostrava is generally safe, but it has well-documented socially excluded pockets — parts of Vítkovice, Kunčičky, Hrušov, and the area around Přívoz station — where you're not going to get mugged in daylight, but you shouldn't rent without walking the street first, by day and at night.
Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
