Brno
Aprox. 369,559 habitantesApprox. 369,559 people
Brno is the Czech Republic's second city and the capital of Moravia, in the southeast, far calmer and less touristy than Prague. It's a university and tech city, with a large student population that gives its squares and beer halls their energy. Its compact centre is organised around Freedom Square (náměstí Svobody), with the hill of Špilberk Castle watching over it and the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul (Petrov) marking the skyline. It's also home to Villa Tugendhat, a masterpiece of the modern movement and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Brno? How much do you need per month in Brno?
Brno works if you want a European base that's reasonably priced by EU standards: excellent public transport, solid and boringly reliable internet, and a real tech scene (Red Hat, IBM and two big universities fill the city with young, international people). It doesn't work if you need sun, a big airport, or big-city energy: winters are grey, it gets dark at four, the city empties out of students in July and August, and to fly anywhere you'll usually end up in Vienna or Prague. It's cheaper than Western Europe, but no longer cheap compared to southern or eastern Europe, and rents keep climbing.

Very good and boringly reliable, which is exactly what you want. At home you'll get fiber or cable at 250 Mbps to 1 Gbps for ≈US$20–30 a month; the big providers are O2, Vodafone (the cable network inherited from UPC) and T-Mobile, and Brno also has well-regarded local ISPs. Power cuts and long internet outages just aren't a thing here. Mobile 4G/5G coverage is excellent across the city and holds up well on the train to Prague. The real catch: mobile data in Czechia is among the priciest in the EU and genuinely unlimited plans are rare or expensive — don't plan to live off your hotspot. If you rent a flat with internet "included," ask about the speed and the provider before signing.
CoworkingCoworking
A mid-sized but genuine scene, driven by the tech and university ecosystem rather than by nomad tourism. A hot desk runs about ≈US$120–200 a month, a dedicated office noticeably more. The names almost everyone mentions are Impact Hub Brno, downtown, and KUMST, the creative hub on Údolní street (more design-and-creatives than developers); there are more company-oriented options around the Technology Park in Královo Pole. Most offer a trial day — use it before paying for a month. Specialty coffee shops downtown tolerate laptops in the morning but fill up at lunchtime. Double-check current prices when you arrive; they move every year.
Veveří is the obvious pick: right by Masaryk University, walkable to everything, a mix of students and professionals, cafés and trams everywhere. Brno-střed and Staré Brno are the priciest and the most convenient if you want to do everything on foot. Královo Pole is the favorite of people working in tech: well connected by tram, close to the Technology Park and the technical campus, and a bit cheaper than the center. Žabovřesky is residential, green and quiet, with a direct tram downtown — a good call if you value silence. If money is tight, look at Židenice and Černá Pole: cheaper, and Černá Pole puts you next to Lužánky park.
ComunidadCommunity
Easier than you'd expect for a city this size. Two big universities (Masaryk and the technical VUT), waves of Erasmus students, and software companies that run in English mean you can get by in English downtown without drama. The Brno Expat Centre runs orientation and events for newcomers and is the best first point of contact; there are also frequent tech meetups and large open-source conferences every year, driven by Red Hat's presence here. The Spanish-speaking community is small — your social life will happen in English. For paperwork, government offices, older people and anything outside the center, Czech becomes necessary. Czechs are reserved for the first few months and very loyal after that; don't read it as rejection. Watch the calendar: in July and August the students leave and social life drops off noticeably.
Five things a friend would tell you. One: don't flat-hunt in September. Tens of thousands of students come back and the market turns into a scramble — look in spring or early summer instead. Two: leases are usually one year with a one- or two-month deposit (Czech law caps it at three), and many come in Czech only — get a translation and don't sign what you can't read; check how the utility "zálohy" (advance payments) are charged and settled at year end, because heating shows up on the bill in winter. Three: winter is grey, damp and dark by four in the afternoon from November to February, and it flattens plenty of people who arrived delighted in May. Four: Brno's airport is tiny with few routes, so nearly every trip starts with a bus to Vienna (about 2 hours) or a train to Prague (about 2h30) — budget the money and the patience. Five, paperwork: if you're not an EU citizen, Schengen gives you 90 days out of every 180, full stop. Czechia has no nomad visa open to everyone; the classic route is the long-stay visa with a živnostenský list (freelance trade licence), and there has been a specific programme for IT profiles from a short list of countries. Rules and consular appointment availability change often — confirm with the Czech consulate before you book a ticket. Last: everything here is paid in korunas, so the dollar figures move with the exchange rate, and numbers from 2019 blog posts are useless now: the 2022-2023 inflation hit hard and rents are still climbing.
Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
