Founded by Yaik Cossacks, it carries real historical weight: Pugachev's rebellion against Catherine the Great in the 18th century was staged from here. It's a steppe city, with very cold winters and hot summers, old wooden architecture in the historic core, and a mixed Russian-Kazakh culture. Not a mass-tourism spot but a stop of historical and geographic interest.
