Aprox. 394,518 habitantesApprox. 394,518 people

Ndola is the capital of the Copperbelt Province, Zambia's copper mining belt in the north, near the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It's an industrial, commercial city built on copper rather than a safari destination, but it works as a gateway to the mining region. It sits on a plateau just above 1,200 m, giving it a mild climate despite its tropical latitude.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Ndola? How much do you need per month in Ndola?

Ndola isn't a nomad base, and it's worth saying that up front: it's the capital of the Copperbelt, a working mining city where the foreigners you meet are mine engineers, NGO staff, Indian and Chinese traders and missionaries — not laptop people in cafés. It works if you have a concrete reason to be in Zambia (a project, family, fieldwork) and you like that living is cheap, everything runs in English, and the city is calm and easy to get around. It doesn't work if you need stable internet with no backup plan: ZESCO load shedding has left whole neighbourhoods without power for long blocks of the day, and without an inverter or Starlink your work week falls apart on its own.

Sin ninguno de los dos, no.Fibre exists but only in patches, concentrated in the centre and the better residential areas; the providers you'll see are Liquid Home, Zamtel and the mobile operators, with typical speeds around 10–40 Mbps on plans that feel expensive for what they deliver. Before you sign a lease, ask address by address whether fibre actually reaches it — two streets over the answer changes. MTN and Airtel 4G is fine inside town and drops off fast once you head out to the districts. The real problem isn't bandwidth, it's power: the Kariba drought pushed Zambia into heavy load shedding from 2024, with long rotating outages by neighbourhood — exactly how bad depends on how each year's rains come in, so check on arrival and don't trust a schedule you read online. Starlink has been available in Zambia since late 2023 and is the backup plenty of business people already run; pair it with a decent inverter and you can genuinely work here. Without either, you can't.

CoworkingCoworking

There is no coworking scene in Ndola. No monthly-membership spaces, no hot desks, no freelancer community — that lives in Lusaka, four or five hours away by road, where the country does have a small tech ecosystem (BongoHive is the known hub). What people here actually use are hotel lobbies and business centres — the Protea, the Savoy, the Mukuba — a café inside Mukuba Mall, and mostly their own house. If you need a real office, you rent ordinary commercial space by the month, not by the desk.

Northrise is the most comfortable area and where most foreigners end up: walled houses with gardens and a guard, near Northrise University. Kansenshi and Itawa are the other good residential block, a bit more central. Riverside rounds out the quiet house neighbourhoods. The compounds where most of Ndola actually lives — Kabushi, Chifubu, Masala, Ndeke — are far cheaper but thin on services, and almost no foreigners live there.

ComunidadCommunity

The foreign community is small and very specific: mining, NGOs, church, plus the Indian and Chinese business communities that have been here for decades. There are no nomad meetups or coliving groups; social life runs through church, sports and golf clubs, the gym, and dinners with work people — if you don't come in through one of those, you can go months without meeting anyone. The upside: English is the official language and works everywhere, with Bemba as the day-to-day street language across the Copperbelt. Spanish speakers: essentially none.

Three real things, not brochure things. One: the Copperbelt is malaria country — take prophylaxis, repellent and a net seriously, especially in the November-to-April rains, which also bring hard storms and bad roads. Two: money. The kwacha has depreciated a lot and inflation hits imports hardest (a good chunk of your groceries comes from South Africa), so the dollar prices you see today may not hold a year from now — and landlords routinely ask for three to six months' rent up front in cash, so budget for that opening hit. Three: Zambia has no digital nomad visa — you come in as a tourist (several passports have it easy, but the rules have changed more than once, so confirm with immigration before you book) and extensions are an in-person process. Also: without a car you depend on minibuses and one trusted taxi driver you phone directly — ride-hailing apps live mostly in Lusaka, don't count on them here; the city is reasonably calm by day but you don't walk at night; and the whole economy moves with the copper price, which you feel in the mood of the place when the mines are down.

Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
