Lusaka is the capital of Zambia and its economic engine, a relatively young city that grew in the 20th century on a high, flat plateau in south-central Africa, around 1,280 meters up. That altitude gives it a surprisingly mild climate for the tropics. More than a destination in itself, it's the country's gateway: you land here and set off from here toward Victoria Falls or the great safari parks. English is spoken, the mood is calm, and life revolves around markets, malls and the arteries that cross the city.
Mejor épocaBest time
The dry season (May-October) is best for travel and for the country's safaris. The rainy season (November-April) is warm and green. The altitude tempers the heat.
PresupuestoBudget
Moneda: kwacha zambiano.Moderate: basics are cheap, but imports and Western-standard lodging raise the bill. Currency: the Zambian kwacha.

The city is sprawling and car-based; locals use minibuses. For travelers, a taxi or car with driver is the practical option. English is spoken everywhere.

Mercados y vida local
Its main draw is everyday: open-air markets, crafts and the life of a calm, friendly African capital, more to experience than to sightsee monumentally.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Lusaka? How much do you need per month in Lusaka?
Lusaka works if you have a real reason to be in Zambia — an NGO, mining, a local project — or if you want a calm African base in English with mild highland weather. It doesn't work if you want the classic nomad hub of cafés, coworking and beach: the remote-work scene here is tiny, the city runs on cars rather than on walking, and flights in are expensive and almost always connect through Johannesburg, Addis Ababa, Nairobi or Dubai. The serious problem isn't price, it's power: ZESCO load shedding can cut your workday in half, and without an inverter with a battery or Starlink with backup you're simply not functional. Also, it's not as cheap as it sounds: Western-standard housing is priced in dollars and imported groceries hurt.

Fiber exists in the central suburbs (Liquid Home, Zamtel, Airtel) and in practice gives you something in the range of 10–40 Mbps down, with noticeably slower upload; faster packages exist but the price climbs fast. Plenty for video calls, not great for pushing heavy files all day. And here's the catch: when the power goes, your router goes with it. City 4G coverage on MTN and Airtel is solid — a lot of people tether on the days fiber misbehaves — but mobile data isn't cheap, so don't make it your primary plan. Starlink has operated in Zambia since late 2023 and a fair number of foreigners use it for exactly this reason; it works well, but it also needs a battery to survive a blackout. There's no site blocking or "you need a VPN to work" censorship. Practical Lusaka rule: your connection is worth whatever your power backup is worth, not whatever your plan says.
CoworkingCoworking
There is a scene, but it's small and more "local startup" than "nomad passing through." The one name I can give you with confidence is BongoHive, Lusaka's tech and innovation hub: the historic meeting point of Zambia's tech community, with events, programs and workspace. Beyond that, what exists is serviced offices and small spaces scattered around Rhodes Park, Longacres and the areas near the malls, rather than a big network of branded coworkings — don't arrive expecting a WeWork or a list of twenty options. Budget ≈US$70–150 a month for a hot desk, with wide variation depending on whether the space has its own generator, which is precisely what you're paying for. Loads of people just work from mall cafés (Manda Hill, Arcades, East Park, Levy Junction) because they have backup power and wifi; a coffee runs about ≈US$2–3. Confirm prices — and that the space still exists — before you fly: places here open and close easily.
Kabulonga and Ibex Hill / Leopards Hill Road are the classic expat belt: green, gated houses and apartments with security, embassies and NGOs, decent restaurants. Comfortable and safe, but expensive and basically unworkable without a car. Rhodes Park, Longacres and Northmead are your best bet if you won't be driving: more central, cheaper, close to Arcades and Levy Junction, with a bit more life on foot. Roma, Kalundu and Olympia are quiet middle-class residential areas — better value and less of an expat bubble. Woodlands, Chalala and Makeni work if you want a house with a garden and a family feel, though they put you further out. The actual downtown, Cairo Road, is for paperwork, banks and markets — not a place to live.
ComunidadCommunity
The huge advantage is language: English is official and everyone in Lusaka speaks it, so from day one you can open an account, negotiate rent and make friends with zero barrier (Nyanja is the street language, and learning four phrases goes a long way). The downside: the foreign community is NGO, aid, diplomatic and mining people, not digital nomads, and it's a fairly closed circle you enter through introductions. Spanish-speaking community: minimal, close to nonexistent outside a handful of embassy and project people. You meet people at BongoHive events, running and sports groups, churches — which carry a lot of social weight here — and expat WhatsApp and Facebook groups. The city is spread out and car-based, so socializing has to be planned: there's no café street where you bump into people by accident. Be proactive and you'll have a circle in a month; wait for it to happen and you'll leave isolated.
First and above all: the power. Zambia depends almost entirely on the Kariba hydro dam, and when the reservoir drops — as it did in the 2024 drought — ZESCO imposes scheduled outages that at their worst have run twelve hours a day or more. Good rains improve it, but don't arrive assuming it's fixed: ask about your area's schedule before signing anything, and budget for an inverter with a battery or Starlink with backup. Second, money: the kwacha is volatile, inflation shows up in the supermarket, and many landlords renting to foreigners quote in dollars and want several months up front (three to six is normal, sometimes more) — arrive with a cash cushion. Third, mobility: without a car you live on minibuses and ride-hailing apps, and that adds up more than you'd expect over a month. Safety: Lusaka is calmer than other capitals in the region, but opportunistic theft is real — don't walk at night, and watch your phone on Cairo Road and in busy markets. Weather: rainy season runs November to April with heavy storms, flooded roads and more blackouts; October is the brutally hot month before the rains, and in June–July nights get genuinely cold in houses with no heating. Health: Lusaka had a serious cholera outbreak between late 2023 and early 2024, so be careful with water and street food and ask about the vaccine; and while malaria risk in the city itself is lower than in the rest of the country, Zambia is an endemic country and the moment you head out (Livingstone, Luangwa, Kafue) it's a real issue — talk to a travel doctor about prophylaxis. And visas: Zambia has no digital nomad visa, so you'd be working remotely on a tourist entry, with a limited stay and renewals. Entry rules have changed several times in recent years and quite a few nationalities now enter visa-free or get a visa on arrival; check your own case against the official source before you buy the ticket.
Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
