In the late 1800s and early 1900s the industrialist-reformer Zhang Jian made it a pioneer: he founded textile mills, schools and, in 1905, the Nantong Museum, regarded as the first museum created by a Chinese person. That earned it the label "China's first modern city." Wolf Mountain (Langshan), with its temples above the Yangtze, is its signature landscape. Today it's an industrial and textile port well linked to Shanghai.
