Nairobi is the gateway to safari and, increasingly, Africa's tech hub ('Silicon Savannah'): a green, buzzing capital where lions graze in a national park within sight of the skyscrapers. Warm, young and creative, with an honest safety caveat (use Uber at night, mind your things), but with an unstoppable energy.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Nairobi? How much do you need per month in Nairobi?

Nairobi works if your work faces Africa: it's the regional hub (flights across the continent, NGOs, UN offices, the startup scene people call "Silicon Savannah"), everything runs in English from day one, and you're at ~1,800 m — mild weather most of the year, no air conditioning needed. What it isn't: cheap. Living to a Western standard in Kilimani or Westlands costs about what Mexico City does, and you pay a daily tax in brutal traffic, safety that changes by neighborhood and hour, and power cuts. If you want to walk around at night, a beach nearby, or comfort on US$800, this isn't your base.

Home fiber is good for the region. Typical residential plans start around ≈US$25–30 a month for something basic (roughly 10 Mbps), and ≈US$40–50 gets you into the 30–40 Mbps range — plenty for video calls all day. The main providers are Safaricom Home Fibre, Zuku and Faiba; fiber coverage is solid in Kilimani, Westlands, Lavington and Kileleshwa, and patchier the further out you go — confirm the building is already connected before you sign. Mobile is the real strength: Safaricom's coverage across the city is excellent, so tethering is always a workable plan B. The weak link isn't the internet, it's the power: Kenya Power outages are part of life here, from short dips to nationwide blackouts that have made the news, so a UPS or inverter for your router isn't a luxury. Nearly every coworking runs a generator for exactly this reason.

CoworkingCoworking

The scene is one of the most mature in East Africa, not just a couple of cafés with Wi-Fi. Nairobi Garage is the startup and remote-team classic, with locations around Westlands/Kilimani; Ikigai runs several garden-house style spots (Lavington, Westlands, Karen) and is the nicest place to put in long hours; iHub, in Kilimani, is basically the birthplace of Kenya's tech ecosystem. A monthly hot desk runs ≈US$100–250 depending on the space and plan, a private office considerably more — always ask for a trial day before paying for a month. They all sell the same real value: generator, redundant internet, secure parking. People also work from cafés a lot (Java House and Artcaffe are everywhere), but they're loud and at peak hours there's no free outlet.

Kilimani is the nomad default: new furnished apartment blocks, restaurants, coworkings, everything a short Uber away — in exchange for noise and permanent construction. Westlands is the business and nightlife zone, with malls (Sarit Centre, Westgate), pricier and busier. Lavington and Kileleshwa are the calmer step up: tree-lined streets, houses and low-rise blocks, a good call if you want to sleep well and don't mind being less central. Karen is the other extreme: green, houses with gardens, countryside feel, and far from everything — it only makes sense if you'll have a car. Gigiri is the UN-and-embassy bubble: safe and expensive, but socially and gastronomically dull.

ComunidadCommunity

Meeting people is easy, partly because there's no language barrier: English is an official language and daily life — banks, leases, work, waiters — runs in English; Swahili and Sheng are the street languages, but you don't need them to live here. The foreign community is large and settled rather than transient: Nairobi is one of the UN's main duty stations (UNEP and UN-Habitat are headquartered here), with hundreds of NGOs, correspondents and regional offices, plus a very active local tech ecosystem with events and meetups most weeks. Social sport is everywhere: running groups on every corner (you are in Kenya, after all) and rugby with a serious following. The Spanish-speaking community is small and mostly tied to diplomacy and development work; if you're hoping to live in Spanish, you'll end up in English anyway.

Safety: it's real, and it's neighborhood- and hour-specific. The local rule everyone follows is don't walk at night, don't have your phone out, and take an Uber or Bolt even for a ten-minute walk; downtown (the CBD) is avoided after dark. It's not paranoia, it's routine. Traffic: eight kilometers can take an hour at rush hour, so pick your neighborhood around where you'll actually be, not around price. Rain: the long rains run March to May and don't just get you wet — they flood streets and shut the city down. Renting: expect a one- or two-month deposit and sometimes payment up front; the "foreigner price" is a real thing, so compare and negotiate. And budget utilities separately: electricity is bought with prepaid tokens and is expensive for what it delivers, and many buildings charge a service fee on top of rent. Protests: since 2024 there have been large demonstrations that close the CBD and disrupt transport — check the mood before heading out that day. Paperwork: Kenya uses an electronic travel authorization (eTA) that normally allows stays of up to 90 days, and a digital nomad permit with a high income requirement has been announced; the rules have shifted more than once, so confirm the current cost and process on the official source before planning around it. Health: at 1,800 m Nairobi is effectively a malaria-free zone — but the coast and safari areas are not, so plan prophylaxis if you travel.

Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
