As the name says, the Ruhr river runs through it, and unlike the region's smokestack cliché, it's one of its greenest cities: the river, its banks and parks fill much of the centre. It had mining and steel, and today it's home to well-known companies and research institutes. It's a calm, practical stop for seeing the Ruhr without the bustle of the bigger cities.
