The Swat River runs green and cold down from the Himalaya-Hindu Kush, and the valley — orchards, rice terraces and snow peaks behind — is known as one of the country's most beautiful corners. Mingora became globally known as Malala Yousafzai's hometown and for the hard years of Taliban control (2007-2009), now behind it. It also sits on a thousand-year Buddhist past: this was the heart of ancient Gandhara.
