Rawalpindi is Islamabad's twin city, in northern Punjab, Pakistan: where the capital is planned and green, 'Pindi' is the lively, chaotic counterpart —dense bazaars, history and everyday hustle. It was a major military cantonment in British times and remains one, home to the Pakistani army's headquarters. For travelers it's usually the practical base for the capital region and the launch point toward the Murree hills and the country's mountainous north.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Rawalpindi? How much do you need per month in Rawalpindi?
Rawalpindi is dirt cheap in dollar terms and home fiber is surprisingly decent, but it isn't a nomad base: it's a dense, loud garrison city glued to Islamabad, and almost every foreigner who comes ends up living on the other side. It works if you have a real reason to be in Pakistan — family, a project, genuine curiosity about the country — and can live with power cuts, mobile internet shutdowns on protest days, and a visa process nobody designed with you in mind. It doesn't work if you want to land, plug into a coworking scene and meet people in a week: that doesn't exist here.

Better than you'd expect: the Rawalpindi–Islamabad corridor is among the best-wired parts of the country, with real FTTH from Nayatel and PTCL, plus StormFiber depending on your exact street (ask by address, not by neighborhood). Inside the fiber footprint you'll get a stable 50–100 Mbps; upload is usually a lot weaker than download, so if you're on video calls all day check that number before you sign. The problem isn't bandwidth, it's power: cuts are real, and without a UPS or battery for your router you drop off even while the fiber is alive — everyone who works from home here has backup power, it isn't optional. On mobile, 4G on Zong or Jazz works well and costs almost nothing; commercial 5G is basically nonexistent. What will hurt: authorities suspend mobile internet for hours or whole days across Rawalpindi and Islamabad during protests, rallies and sensitive dates, some platforms have been blocked since 2024, and national filtering has left international connections crawling in stretches. You'll be on a VPN, and the VPN also drags or dies on those days. Always make home fiber your plan A, not your phone.
CoworkingCoworking
Let's be blunt: Rawalpindi proper has no coworking scene. What exists is a handful of small shared offices inside Bahria Town or near the Cantt, aimed at local startups and agencies, with no foreign community and no guarantee they'll still be open next year — don't move counting on a specific one, check it exists before you fly. The real scene is in Islamabad, 20–40 minutes away depending on traffic: established private spaces plus the National Incubation Center on the NUST campus — though note the NIC is a cohort-based incubator, not a desk you rent by the month. Budget ≈US$60–120 a month for a desk at a private space, plus what you burn commuting daily. Honestly, most people here work from home or from cafés with a plug and workable wifi; if your plan depends on a coworking with a social life attached, just take the apartment on the Islamabad side and skip the commute.
Bahria Town Rawalpindi is the short answer: a huge gated development with steadier power, wide streets, shops and its own security — it's where returning overseas Pakistanis land, and where almost any foreigner who chooses the Pindi side ends up. DHA (the phases along the Islamabad Expressway) is the other option in that bracket: expensive by local standards, comfortable, dull, well connected. If you want an actual city rather than a bubble, the Cantt and Saddar area is historic Pindi — commerce, food, noise — with far cheaper rents and old infrastructure. Satellite Town and the Askari colonies sit in the middle: local middle class, functional, quiet, zero international scene. That said: almost everyone with a choice ends up in Islamabad — F-6, F-7, F-10, F-11, E-11 — and comes down to Pindi to eat and shop.
ComunidadCommunity
Hard, and there's no point sugarcoating it: there is no nomad community here. No remote-worker meetups, no expat group in Pindi, no Spanish-speaking scene — if you want Spanish you'll be video-calling home. What there is, in abundance, is genuine Pakistani hospitality: people invite you into their homes to eat with an ease that barely exists elsewhere, and a conversation at a tea stall can end at a family wedding. English gets you around Islamabad, Bahria and anyone with schooling; in the bazaar and with drivers it's Urdu and you'll be improvising with a translator app. Real social life runs through private invitations and work, not open events, so without a bridge — a local colleague, a client, a friend — you can go months meeting nobody. For solo women the atmosphere is noticeably more conservative than Islamabad, and spontaneous social life is considerably harder.
First, the visa: Pakistan has nothing resembling a nomad visa. You come on a tourist or business e-visa, short stays, extensions that depend on the office; entry rules have changed several times in recent years (openings announced and walked back), so don't trust a blog or this page: confirm with the Pakistani mission that covers you before booking. For some regions foreigners still need an NOC (permit) to travel. Second, politics: Rawalpindi is a garrison city, home to army GHQ, and when there are marches or rallies they shut avenues with shipping containers, your hop to Islamabad becomes two hours, and mobile internet goes dark with no warning. Not dangerous to you day to day, but it wrecks a work week. The weather punishes: 40 °C-plus summers with power cuts exactly when you want the AC most, a July–August monsoon in which the Leh nullah overflows and the low-lying parts of the old city flood badly — check where you rent — and a winter with noticeable air pollution (milder than Lahore, but not clean). Add that alcohol is prohibited for Muslims and an odd bureaucratic errand for foreigners, that eating or drinking in public during Ramadan is both frowned on and regulated, and that money here is cash: the rupee has devalued badly in recent years, your foreign cards will fail in half the places you try, and rental contracts are done by hand, almost always with several months paid up front. One budget warning too: in dollars this is dirt cheap, but local inflation is high and volatile — treat these numbers as orders of magnitude and confirm them on arrival. Come with realistic expectations and a backup plan for both power and internet.
Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
