Mentougou is the mountainous district of western Beijing, a world apart from the downtown skyscrapers: this is where the ranges ringing the Chinese capital begin, cut by the Yongding River and marked by a coal-mining past. It's Beijingers' green escape, and it holds some of the area's oldest Buddhist temples—Tanzhe and Jietai—plus stone villages from the Ming and Qing eras like Cuandixia. It isn't a classic sightseeing city but a huge district where people go to hike the mountains, see centuries-old temples and breathe away from the asphalt.
Mejor épocaBest time
Fall (September–October) is best, with colored mountains and clear skies. Spring is pleasant; summer brings heat and rain, and winter is cold and dry, typical of northern China.
PresupuestoBudget
As part of Beijing, prices run lower than the tourist center. Local food and buses are cheap; temples charge modest entry fees. It works well as a day trip.
EntradaEntry
China requires a visa from most, though transit exemptions exist for several nationalities. Mentougou is part of Beijing municipality, so you enter via the capital and its rules.
Beijing's subway (line S1) reaches the district and suburban buses run to temples and villages, but for the more remote mountain areas a taxi or car helps. It's large and spread out—not walkable end to end.

Templo Tanzhe (Tanzhe Si)
Dice el refrán que "primero existió el templo Tanzhe, luego Pekín".One of the oldest Buddhist temples in the Beijing region, predating the imperial city itself, set among mountains and ancient ginkgo trees. A local saying goes: "First there was Tanzhe Temple, then Beijing."
Templo Jietai (Jietai Si)
Famous for its monk-ordination platform and its centuries-old, contorted pines, near Tanzhe Temple. The two are usually visited together.
The district is above all nature: mountain trails, gorges and the Yongding River, the reason Beijingers escape here on weekends.
