Meknès is one of Morocco's four imperial cities. Sultan Moulay Ismail made it his capital in the late 17th century and filled it with ramparts, palaces and monumental gates, dreaming of a Moroccan Versailles. Its medina is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, fronted by Bab Mansour, one of the grandest gateways in the country. It's a calmer, less touristy city than Fez or Marrakech, set in farm country of olive groves and vineyards. Close by lie the Roman ruins of Volubilis and the holy town of Moulay Idriss.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Mequinez? How much do you need per month in Mequinez?
Meknes is one of the cheapest bases you'll find in Morocco: a genuine imperial city with a medina, a university and real local life, an hour by train from Fez and about two from Rabat, for meaningfully less than either. It works if you work solo, don't need a nomad community, and want to stretch your budget in a normal Moroccan city rather than a tourist showcase. It doesn't work if you depend on coworking spaces, on meeting people in English, or on an expat scene: there's barely any here, daily life runs in Darija and French, and to socialize with other nomads you'll be getting on a train.

All three national carriers — Maroc Telecom, Orange and inwi — operate here, and parts of the ville nouvelle have fiber, though don't assume the apartment you like is covered: ask about the exact address before you sign. On fiber, home plans typically run ≈50-200 Mbps down, with noticeably slower upload, so if you live on long video calls or heavy uploads, run a real test on site. In the medina and older buildings ADSL is still the norm, and there you can be stuck at 10-20 Mbps. 4G is solid across the city and is your genuine backup; 5G is rolling out in Morocco starting with the big cities, so treat it as a bonus here, not a plan. One honest caveat: Morocco blocked VoIP calls for a stretch and, while WhatsApp, Zoom and Meet generally work now, voice quality can drop depending on the carrier and time of day. Keep a plan B.
CoworkingCoworking
This is Meknes's weak spot: the coworking scene is minimal. It's not a city with established spaces like Rabat, Casablanca or Marrakech; what exists are small initiatives tied to the university or the local startup scene that open and close, so I won't hand you names I can't stand behind. In practice, people working remotely from Meknes work from home and use the cafés in Hamria, which are plentiful, cheap and have decent wifi, along with the noise and smoke of a typical Moroccan café. For price reference, a monthly coworking membership in Morocco usually runs ≈US$60-150 depending on city and space, but confirm on arrival what actually exists here. If coworking is non-negotiable for you, look at Fez (an hour by train) or Rabat outright.
Hamria is the short answer: it's the ville nouvelle, the French-planned side with avenues, cafés, banks, supermarkets and the modern apartments, and it's where practically any foreigner staying for months ends up. Belle Vue, next to Hamria, is more residential and quieter, with newer buildings and similar or slightly better rents. Out toward the Marjane area and the road to Fez there are newer, cheaper apartments, but you'll depend on taxis for almost everything. The medina and the rest of the old city are gorgeous and dirt cheap, and very few nomads last living there: old houses, weak internet, noise from early, and streets no car fits down. The Bou Fekrane river splits the old city from the new one, and that divide matters far more than it looks on a map.
ComunidadCommunity
Don't count on a nomad community, because there isn't one: Meknes isn't on the circuit and you can go weeks without running into another foreigner who actually lives here. What you do get is a big university city thanks to Moulay Ismail, plenty of young people, and a café-and-invitation culture that makes meeting Moroccans easy if you're the one who reaches out. Daily life runs in Darija, and French will get you through almost any errand, lease or restaurant; English is mostly students and younger people. Spanish is understood far less than in the north of the country (Tangier, Tetouan), so don't arrive assuming you'll get by in Spanish. For meetups, events and finding other remote workers, your real plan is the train: Fez an hour away, Rabat about two.
Four things a friend would tell you before you book. One: winter. Meknes sits inland at middling elevation, and from December to February it gets genuinely cold and damp, with unheated apartments and walls that insulate nothing; plenty of people suffer more in January than in August. Summer is the opposite, dry with days well above 35 °C. Two: the visa. Morocco gives 90 days visa-free to most European and Latin American passports, there is no digital nomad visa, and extending from inside the country is slow and uncertain; the normal move is to leave and re-enter, with the cost and the risk of questions at the border if you do it too often. Check your own passport with the consulate before you travel. Three: renting. Almost everything closes in cash, with no formal contract or a very basic one, several months up front, and there's barely any furnished inventory listed online; the practical route is to land on a monthly Airbnb and search in person with a samsar (local agent), asking around the neighborhood. Four: social life. Meknes is among the more conservative cities on the imperial circuit, the rhythm changes completely during Ramadan (restaurants closed by day, shifted hours), and although the region is the country's wine area, alcohol is bought at specific liquor shops rather than any supermarket — several big chains stopped selling it — so drinking here is a discreet thing rather than a bar scene. On the upside: the city feels safe, and the hustling aimed at foreigners is far milder than in Marrakech or Fez, which you appreciate when you actually live somewhere instead of passing through.
Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
