It's Gutenberg's city, birthplace of movable-type printing, and it celebrates the fact with a dedicated museum. It has a red-sandstone Romanesque cathedral looming over the old town, heads the Rheinhessen wine region, and throws itself into Fastnacht (carnival) like few others. Compact, studenty, and very Rhineland: wine, squares, and Rhenish good humor.
