Its defining feature is BASF: the world's largest integrated chemical complex is here, and the city grew up around it. It's not a classic tourist destination but a modern, functional working city, shaped by postwar rebuilding. Its great asset is location: cross the bridge to Mannheim, and Heidelberg, the Palatinate wine route and the whole Rhine-Neckar region are within easy reach.
