Lhasa

Aprox. 118,721 habitantesApprox. 118,721 people

Lhasa is the heart of Tibet, at around 3,650 meters altitude in a valley of the Kyi river, a tributary of the Yarlung Tsangpo. For centuries the seat of the Dalai Lama, it remains the spiritual center of Tibetan Buddhism: the Potala Palace dominates the city from its hill, and around the Jokhang Temple pilgrims circle endlessly along the Barkhor route. It's a city of two faces —the old Tibetan quarter and the modern Chinese side— and thin air: the altitude hits you the moment you step off the train or plane.

Mejor épocaBest time

April to October, avoiding the July–August monsoon where possible. Lhasa is sunny most of the year but cold: at that altitude nights are freezing even in summer. Ascend slowly to acclimatize.

EntradaEntry

Beyond a China visa, Tibet requires a Tibet Travel Permit (TTB) and, in practice, traveling with an organized tour and guide. Independent travel isn't allowed; arrange permits well in advance.

PresupuestoBudget

Tibet costs more than other parts of China because of the mandatory tour, guide and transport. The currency is the yuan; carry cash for rural stretches beyond Lhasa.

The Tibetan center —Barkhor, Jokhang, market— is walkable. To get there, the spectacular Qinghai–Tibet railway helps you acclimatize better than flying straight into Gonggar airport.

The climb is demanding at altitude, but it's the very image of Tibet.

The holiest temple in Tibetan Buddhism, a pilgrimage goal since the 7th century. You'll see the faithful prostrating before its entrance and incense smoke rising over the Barkhor.

Monasterios de Drepung y Sera
