It stretches narrow and long between arid mountains along the river, and for centuries was a key Silk Road crossing toward the Hexi Corridor. Today it's an industrial and rail center, and the natural gateway to the Tibetan west and the desert. It's famous across China for its beef noodles (Lanzhou lamian). Dry, continental climate with cold winters.
