Kutaisi

Aprox. 178,338 habitantesApprox. 178,338 people

Kutaisi is one of Georgia's oldest cities, historic capital of the kingdom of Colchis and of the medieval Georgian kingdom, on the banks of the Rioni River in the Imereti region. Today it's known for two things: its medieval heritage —Bagrati Cathedral and Gelati Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage site— and its airport, a cheap gateway to the Caucasus thanks to Wizz Air's low-cost flights. It's a calm, green and very affordable city, a good base for exploring the canyons and caves of western Georgia.

Mejor épocaBest time

Late spring (May-Jun) and early fall (Sep-Oct). Imereti gets a fair amount of rain and summers are warm and humid; winters are mild but grey.

PresupuestoBudget

Very cheap by European standards. With the GEL currency, food and lodging cost little; it's one of the best-value destinations in the Caucasus.

EntradaEntry

Georgia allows long visa-free stays for many nationalities (up to a year in several cases), which has made it popular with nomads.

Costo de vida nómadaNomad cost of living

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Kutaisi? How much do you need per month in Kutaisi?

Kutaisi is one of the cheapest bases left in Europe: on ≈US$600 a month you live decently, and the Wizz Air airport drops you across half of Europe for the price of a dinner. It works if your priority is low cost, mountains and rivers nearby, and the full year of visa-free stay Georgia grants a long list of passports. It does not work if you need a nomad community, a real coworking scene, or to live your day in English — that's Tbilisi or Batumi, not here. Add that Imereti is one of the rainiest regions in the country and that winter inside a badly insulated flat is the damp kind of cold that gets into your bones.

Fiber is good and absurdly cheap: Magti or Silknet give you 100 Mbps or more for ≈US$12–20 a month, and it's plenty for video calls. The weak point isn't the ISP, it's the internal wiring of older buildings, which is a lottery: ask the landlord which company actually reaches the flat and run a speed test BEFORE you sign, not after. 4G covers the whole city well and costs almost nothing; 5G exists in Georgia but don't count on consistent coverage here. Power cuts happen — more in winter and during heavy storms — and are usually short, but keep mobile data as backup and a power bank if your job runs on fixed-time meetings.

CoworkingCoworking

Let's be honest: there's barely a scene. Kutaisi isn't Tbilisi or Batumi, and the normal setup is working from home or from cafés downtown, where the price of a coffee (≈US$1.50–3) buys you hours. Small spaces have opened and closed, and there are public innovation/tech initiatives tied to the international university and government programs, but don't move here counting on one specific coworking: check what's actually open when you arrive and don't trust stale Google Maps listings. If you find one, a monthly pass runs ≈US$50–90. Honest plan B: pay a bit more for a flat with a proper desk and good fiber, and skip coworking entirely.

Truth is the very few foreigners who live here cluster in the Center, around Rustaveli Avenue, the White Bridge over the Rioni and the bazaar: it's the most walkable part, where the café life is, and where you'll want to be for a short stay. Outside that, what changes is the price, not the community: Sapichkhia and the slopes toward Bagrati are quieter, greener and have views, but they're uphill and you'll lean on taxis. Balakhvani is residential, calm and better value per square meter. And the Soviet blocks of Avtokarkhana are among the cheapest in the city: ugly buildings, sometimes surprisingly decent flats inside, and enough transport into the center. Walk the block before you sign: here the real differences are between buildings, not neighborhoods.

ComunidadCommunity

There is no nomad community here, full stop. There are students and staff at the international university, some Russians, Belarusians and Ukrainians who settled after 2022, and not much else; Georgia's expat groups online are almost entirely Tbilisi- and Batumi-centric. Spanish speakers: basically none. Daily life runs in Georgian — with its own alphabet, which you won't read without studying it — Russian saves you with a lot of people over 35, and English works with young people, at the university and in a few downtown cafés. The good news is that Georgian hospitality isn't marketing: you make friends through your neighbor, your landlord or the woman at the bazaar, not through meetups. If you need events and networking, you'll be taking the bus to Tbilisi.

What a friend would tell you: it rains a lot. Imereti is one of Georgia's wettest regions and autumn and spring bring whole weeks of grey and damp; summer is sticky heat that peaks around 33–35°C, and winter isn't Siberia but it is wet cold in badly insulated flats, with gas heating and bills that double — check the walls and the bathroom for mold before you sign. Safety, on the other hand, is one of the good parts: Georgia has low crime and you'll walk at night without thinking about it; the real risk is traffic, how people drive here, and broken sidewalks. Rentals are almost always informal and cash, sometimes quoted in dollars even though you pay in lari, so insist on a written contract and photos of the flat's condition. Georgia lets a long list of passports stay visa-free for up to a year and the small-business tax regime is real, but confirm your specific case at the official source and with a local accountant before moving — don't trust what you read in a Facebook group. And be honest with yourself: it's a city of roughly 130,000–140,000 that you'll exhaust in two weeks; for serious medical care, paperwork or a social life you're heading to Tbilisi, about 3–4 hours away by road. The airport is cheap but sits ~20–25 km out of town and plenty of low-cost flights leave at awkward hours.

Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
