Kampala

Aprox. 1,353,189 habitantesApprox. 1,353,189 people

Kampala is Uganda's capital, spread over several hills beside Lake Victoria, almost on the equator but tempered by its 1,200 m altitude. It's an energetic, loud city, famous for the thousands of boda-bodas (motorcycle taxis) weaving through traffic. Each hill historically had its role: cathedrals, the mosque, the palace of the Buganda kingdom. It's one of East Africa's liveliest capitals and usually the base before heading out to the country's gorilla parks and safaris.

Mejor épocaBest time

On the equator it stays warm year-round. The dry seasons (December–February and June–August) are best for getting around; rains fall March–May and October–November.

PresupuestoBudget

Uganda is affordable: cheap local food (the 'rolex' — chapati rolled with egg — is a street classic) and budget lodging. Safaris and gorilla permits, on the other hand, are expensive.

EntradaEntry

Uganda requires an e-visa for most visitors; there's also the joint East Africa Tourist Visa with Kenya and Rwanda. Arrange it before travelling.

Boda-bodas are the fast option (use apps like SafeBoda for a helmet and set price) and matatu taxis (minibuses) for fixed routes. Downtown traffic is heavy.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Kampala? How much do you need per month in Kampala?

Kampala works if your job can absorb some friction: daily life runs entirely in English, at 1,200 m the highs sit around 27–28 °C year-round with cool nights (no AC needed), and living comfortably costs less than Nairobi. It's not the bargain the map suggests, though — decent apartments are quoted in dollars, mobile data is taxed and pricey, and the "jam" can eat an hour per trip. It's a bad base if you need bulletproof internet, or if you're LGBTQ+ — Uganda's 2023 law is among the harshest in the world, and that isn't negotiable.

Home fibre exists and is normal in Kololo, Nakasero, Bugolobi and Ntinda: typical residential packages run 10–50 Mbps for ≈US$45–80 a month (faster plans exist, but the price climbs fast). Expensive for what you get if you're coming from Latin America or Asia. MTN and Airtel 4G across the city is solid and works as a backup, but Uganda levies a special tax on internet data, so the gigabyte is costly and video calls burn a bundle fast. The weak point isn't speed, it's continuity: power cuts are frequent (electricity distribution passed from UMEME to state-owned UEDCL in 2025 and service is still uneven), so live in a building with a generator or buy a battery/UPS for your router. There's a real political risk too: Uganda shut down national internet for roughly five days during the January 2021 election and kept Facebook blocked for years afterwards. If your income depends on being online, keep a backup SIM, install a VPN before you arrive, and have a plan B around election season.

CoworkingCoworking

The scene exists but it's small, and it revolves more around Ugandan startups, NGOs and innovation programmes than around passing nomads. The Innovation Village in Ntinda is the biggest hub and hosts the most tech events; Motiv in Bugolobi is the creative/maker space; and veteran hubs like Outbox and Hive Colab have been around for over a decade. A monthly hot desk runs ≈US$80–160, with private offices well above that — check current prices on arrival, they move often. A very common alternative is working from cafés and hotel lobbies: local coffee chains and specialty shops have decent wifi, though they're noisy and outlets are hit or miss.

Kololo is the diplomatic hilltop: embassies, restaurants, security, and the highest prices in town. Nakasero sits right above the centre, packed with offices and the market — convenient but noisier. Bugolobi is the favourite for mid-budget foreigners: residential, quiet, with a supermarket and cafés and good access to Port Bell Road. Muyenga ("Tank Hill") gives you views and houses with gardens in a more suburban feel. To pay less, Ntinda, Bukoto and Kisaasi are middle-class Ugandan neighbourhoods where rent drops a lot in exchange for more traffic. Some people base themselves in Entebbe, about 35–40 km away by the lake and the airport: cooler and calmer, but it cuts you off from Kampala's social life.

ComunidadCommunity

The big advantage is language: English is official and works for everything — landlord, bank, doctor, boda-boda driver. Luganda opens doors and earns real goodwill, but you don't need it to live here. There's a large, well-established foreign community, though it skews aid work, missions, diplomacy and business rather than digital nomads: the purely remote crowd is small, so you'll end up with Ugandan friends and NGO expats more than fellow laptop people. Meeting points are the tech hub events, running and cycling groups, rugby (a sport with deep local roots), and the pool clubs in Kololo and Muyenga. Spanish-speaking community: essentially nonexistent — if you travel to speak Spanish daily, this isn't your city. Socially, Ugandans are warm and easy to approach; making friends is simple, crossing town to see them is the hard part.

Four things before you book the flight. One: the law. Uganda passed an extremely harsh anti-homosexuality act in 2023, largely upheld by the Constitutional Court in 2024, carrying penalties up to life imprisonment and the death penalty for "aggravated homosexuality", plus offences for "promotion". If you're LGBTQ+, this isn't a cultural nuance — it's serious legal risk, and several governments flag it in their travel advice. Two: rent. Local leases commonly demand 6 or even 12 months up front; furnished month-to-month places exist but they're the expensive ones. Never pay without seeing the place, and be wary of "agents" who charge a fee just to show you houses. Everyday prices run in shillings (UGX; the rate hovers around 3,500–3,900 per dollar — confirm it on arrival), but high-end rentals are quoted in dollars. Three: health. Kampala is a malaria zone — use repellent and a net, and talk to a doctor about prophylaxis; a yellow fever certificate is an entry requirement. And the most underrated daily risk isn't crime, it's boda-boda crashes: wear a helmet or take a car. Get insurance that covers medical evacuation. Four: visas and pace. The tourist e-visa is ≈US$50 for up to 90 days (or the East Africa Tourist Visa at ≈US$100, also valid in Kenya and Rwanda); there's no digital nomad visa, so you're technically working in a grey zone. Then add daily life: the traffic is on another level, phone snatching in traffic and around the Kabalagala and Kansanga nightlife strips is real, from March to May and September to November the rain comes hard and everything grinds to a halt, and around elections internet and social media shutdowns are a proven risk.

Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
