Gulu

Aprox. 146,858 habitantesApprox. 146,858 people

Gulu is the largest city in northern Uganda and the heart of the Acholi region. For nearly two decades it was the epicenter of the conflict between the government and Joseph Kony's Lord's Resistance Army (LRA), once ringed by vast camps for displaced people. Since the war wound down in the mid-2000s it has grown into a busy hub for trade and aid organizations, with a young, rebuilding feel. It sits on a warm savanna plateau, far from Uganda's classic tourist circuits.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Gulu? How much do you need per month in Gulu?

But let's be honest: this is an NGO, missionary and researcher town, not a nomad town — there is a foreign circle, but almost nobody here is a remote worker with overseas clients. If your day is back-to-back video calls, this isn't your city; if you want rock-bottom costs, English as the official language and a calm, barely touristed place, it is.

Gulu really runs on MTN and Airtel 4G, and that's your plan A, not your backup: decent downtown and in Senior Quarters, patchy on the edges and in heavy rain. Fixed internet exists along the main corridors (more fixed wireless than fiber-to-the-home), but coverage is street-by-street, not neighborhood-wide — before signing a lease, ask whether it reaches THAT house, not whether "Gulu has it". Expect something in the 10-30 Mbps range on a good day, and nights that aren't good days; don't expect Kampala speeds. Power cuts hurt more than speed does: no electricity, no router, so everyone here works off a battery, inverter or solar. Carry two SIMs (MTN and Airtel), a big power bank, and assume the critical call happens from a hotel lobby with a generator. Also note Ugandan data is expensive for what it delivers — there's an excise levy on data consumption (around 12%) baked into the bundle price.

CoworkingCoworking

Don't kid yourself: Gulu has no coworking scene. No call booths, specialty coffee and monthly memberships like Kampala. People work from hotel lobbies and gardens, a couple of cafés downtown, or the office of the NGO that hired them. There have been hub/incubator attempts around Gulu University, but they open and close, so don't count on one until you've seen it yourself, and don't prepay anything. Your real coworking will be buying food and drinks at a hotel with a generator and decent wifi: budget ≈US$3-6 a day. If something formal ever opens, the only price reference would be Kampala memberships (on the order of ≈US$50-100/month) — but that's a guess, not a Gulu number.

Senior Quarters is the classic expat and NGO-staff area: compounds with land, walls, more quiet — and the highest rents in town. Bardege and Layibi are big local middle-class residential areas, cheaper, with plenty of street life. Pece and Laroo, on the other side of town, are just as livable and cheaper still, but check access, water and road condition in the rainy season. The center (around Custom Corner and the main market) is handy for walking everywhere, but it's loud, dusty and not where foreigners usually live.

ComunidadCommunity

Meeting people is easy — meeting nomads isn't. The foreign circle is small and revolves around NGOs, missions, the university and the hospitals, and it gathers at the same four or five hotels and bars, so within two weeks you know half of it. Huge upside: English is the official language and it's what work, business and most educated people use, so you can function without learning another language. Daily life on the street and at home is in Acholi (Luo); learning greetings buys you far more goodwill than it should. Spanish-speaking community: essentially none, beyond the odd missionary or aid worker. People in Gulu are noticeably talkative and hospitable — the isolation here is professional, not social. What you'll miss is anyone who understands what you do for a living.

Malaria is the serious one, not a brochure detail: northern Uganda has year-round transmission, so treated net, repellent, and a clear plan for what you do if you spike a fever — don't sit on it for two days. Medically, Gulu's regional referral hospital and the Lacor mission hospital a few kilometers out on the Juba road handle basic emergencies; anything major means Kampala, which is where insurance with evacuation stops being a luxury. Weather runs your life here: heavy rains roughly April to October–November (dirt roads turn to mud, tin roofs drown out any call), then December to March is dry, dusty and brutally hot, with no AC in most houses. Boda bodas are how you get around and also the top reason people end up in the ER: bring your own helmet, skip them at night. Nothing about the LRA conflict is active — that ended nearly twenty years ago and Gulu is a calm city — but today's real friction is over land and boundaries, so never pay long-term rent without seeing documents and having a trusted local look them over. If you're tempted to head north toward the South Sudan border, research that separately: Gulu's calm doesn't extend to that stretch. Expect a cash and mobile money economy (MTN MoMo, Airtel Money), a foreigner price that only drops when you ask twice, and inflation plus the shilling's swings moving these numbers — treat them as a reference, not a locked budget. On visas: Uganda has no digital nomad visa. You come in on a tourist e-visa (≈US$50, or ≈US$100 for the East Africa one that also covers Kenya and Rwanda), a yellow fever certificate is required, and extensions go through immigration, in practice almost always in Kampala — confirm before assuming you can sort one without leaving Gulu.

Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
