Kagoshima

Kagoshima is the great city of southern Kyūshū, and its postcard is unmistakable: across the bay smokes Sakurajima, one of Japan's most active volcanoes, which sometimes dusts the city in fine ash. Warm and near-subtropical, Kagoshima was the domain of the powerful Shimazu clan and the birthplace of Saigō Takamori, a key figure of the Meiji Restoration. Here you eat black pork (kurobuta), satsuma sweet potato and drink sweet-potato shōchū. Locals sometimes call it the "Naples of the East" for the bay and the volcano behind it.
