Jinan

Jinan is the capital of Shandong province in eastern China, known as the "City of Springs": more than seventy karst springs bubble up naturally in the middle of the city, feeding ponds and the large Daming Lake. It's wedged between the Yellow River to the north and mountains to the south, and from here Mount Tai, the most revered of China's five sacred mountains, is an easy trip. It's an industrial university city, less touristy than its neighbors but with a pleasant historic core built around the water.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Jinan? How much do you need per month in Jinan?
Jinan is Shandong's provincial capital, around 9 million people, and it works as a base only if you already speak some Chinese or came to study it, have your visa sorted, and your job doesn't die when Google, Slack or Zoom refuse to load. It's genuinely cheap, has a metro (though still only a few lines), a 90-minute bullet train to Beijing and excellent food for two dollars — but there's no nomad scene, almost nobody speaks English, and all international internet goes through a VPN. If you want a remote-work community and easy paperwork, this isn't your city — look at Chiang Mai or Taipei.

Home fiber is fast and cheap: 300–1000 Mbps plans for the equivalent of ≈US$12–20 a month, almost always sold as an annual contract bundled with your phone plan, and 5G covers the whole city well. Power cuts and network outages are basically a non-issue — the infrastructure is solid. The problem isn't speed, it's the Great Firewall: Google, Gmail, WhatsApp, Instagram, YouTube, Slack, Notion and much of the Western work stack are blocked, so you need a VPN for everything. Commercial VPNs are a legal grey area and get blocked in waves, especially around politically sensitive dates; with one running, international latency climbs and video calls drop now and then. If your job is video meetings with clients abroad, budget for one bad day a week and keep a backup VPN.
CoworkingCoworking
The coworking scene is close to nonexistent in the nomad sense. What exists are serviced offices and startup incubators in the Gaoxin (high-tech) zone and downtown office towers, built for Chinese startups and companies rather than foreign freelancers: monthly contracts, everything in Chinese, no international community. Budget ≈US$80–150 a month for a flex desk, though it varies a lot and short terms aren't always on offer — confirm in person. In practice almost everyone working remotely here does it from home or from cafés (Luckin, Starbucks and local chains everywhere, with outlets and decent wifi — but that wifi is behind the firewall too, and at lunchtime it's a zoo).
Lixia is the real downtown: Quancheng Square, Baotu Spring, Daming Lake, metro, restaurants and the city's priciest buildings. The Gaoxin high-tech zone to the east is the new part — towers, modern apartments, tech firms and the CBD; it's where living makes most sense if you want a decent building with a lift. Licheng, around Shandong University's Hongjialou campus, is where international students cluster: cheaper rents, student food and the highest density of foreigners you'll find here. Huaiyin, next to Jinan West station, is handy if you'll take the bullet train often (Beijing in ≈1h30), but it's a commuter area and fairly dull. One caveat when choosing: the metro still has only a few lines and doesn't reach everywhere, so check the walk to a station before you sign or you'll live on buses and Didi.
ComunidadCommunity
The foreigners you'll meet are Chinese-language students at Shandong University and Shandong Normal, English teachers, and the odd multinational engineer — a few thousand people in a city of nine million. Spanish-speaking community: essentially none beyond a stray student. Daily life runs in Mandarin, full stop; off campus almost nobody speaks English, and menus, apps and paperwork are all in Chinese. Socializing happens in WeChat groups, not Meetup or Facebook — without WeChat you're invisible. Shandong people have a reputation for being warm and direct, and if you make an effort with the language doors open fast — but the effort is on you.
Visas first: China has no digital nomad visa, and working remotely on a tourist entry is a grey area, so the realistic ways to stay are a student (X), work (Z) or business visa. Several nationalities get short visa-free entry, but that doesn't make it a base — and either way you must register your address at the local police station within 24 hours of arrival (hotels do it for you; if you rent an apartment, you do it yourself, and they fine you if you don't). Second, the air: Jinan sits in a basin between hills to the south and the Yellow River to the north, in Shandong's industrial belt, and winter smog stalls over the city — there are weeks with AQI above 150. If you have asthma, think twice; if not, buy an air purifier. The weather punishes at both ends: July and August are brutal humid heat with heavy rain, and December to February is dry cold (central heating switches on by decree in mid-November and off in mid-March — before or after that, you tough it out). And all money runs through WeChat Pay and Alipay: they do take foreign cards now and it works far better than a few years ago, but cash is barely used, and without those apps set up you can't even buy a coffee.
Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
