Its modern fame comes from lying at the foot of the Jinggang Mountains (Jinggangshan), the guerrilla base where the Communist revolution took root in the late 1920s and now a shrine of 'red tourism.' It's a humid, subtropical provincial city, more a gateway to the mountains than a postcard in itself.
