Huelva es una ciudad portuaria del suroeste andaluz, entre las desembocaduras de los ríos Tinto y Odiel, en el golfo de Cádiz. Suele quedar a la sombra de Sevilla, y ahí está parte de su gracia: es auténtica y poco turística. De aquí salió Colón en 1492 desde la cercana Palos de la Frontera, tras rezar en el monasterio de La Rábida. La minería de Riotinto dejó huella británica: el Barrio Reina Victoria de casas inglesas y el muelle-embarcadero de mineral sobre el río. Y alrededor, las marismas del Odiel, reserva de la biosfera. Se come de maravilla: gambas blancas, choco y el jamón de Jabugo de su sierra.Huelva is a port city in Spain's southwest, between the mouths of the Tinto and Odiel rivers on the Gulf of Cádiz. It tends to sit in Seville's shadow, and that's part of its charm: authentic and largely untouristed. Columbus set sail in 1492 from nearby Palos de la Frontera, after praying at the La Rábida monastery. Riotinto mining left a British mark: the Reina Victoria quarter of English houses and the ore-loading pier reaching over the river. All around lie the Odiel marshes, a biosphere reserve. The food is superb: white prawns, cuttlefish and Jabugo ham from its mountains.

El casco se recorre a pie. Hay tren y bus desde Sevilla en hora y media larga, y coche para escaparte a las playas de Punta Umbría o a la sierra del jamón.The old town is walkable. There's train and bus from Seville in about ninety minutes, and a car helps for the beaches of Punta Umbría or the ham country in the sierra.
