The city lives in the shadow of that granite peak, famous for its vertical trails and its plank walks bolted over the abyss, among the most vertiginous in the country. It sits on the Wei River plain, where the Qinling rises abruptly, and it's easily reached from Xi'an by high-speed train. It is, above all, the base for climbing Huashan.
