Homs

Homs es una de las grandes ciudades del centro de Siria, sobre el río Orontes (Nahr al-Asi), en una llanura fértil entre Damasco y Alepo. Fue durante mucho tiempo un nudo industrial y agrícola del país, con una refinería importante. Su casco histórico giraba en torno a la mezquita de Khalid ibn al-Walid, con su compañero mameluco enterrado allí, y a un mercado antiguo. La guerra civil que estalló en 2011 dañó gravemente barrios enteros de la ciudad, especialmente el casco viejo, y buena parte sigue en reconstrucción. Es un destino sensible: infórmate bien de la situación antes de plantearte cualquier visita.Homs is one of the major cities of central Syria, on the Orontes River (Nahr al-Asi), on a fertile plain between Damascus and Aleppo. It was long an industrial and agricultural hub, with a large oil refinery. Its historic core centered on the Khalid ibn al-Walid Mosque, where the companion-general is buried, and on an old market. The civil war that began in 2011 severely damaged whole districts, especially the old town, and much of it is still being rebuilt. This is a sensitive destination: check the situation carefully before considering any visit.
