Alepo

Alepo es una de las ciudades habitadas más antiguas del mundo y, hasta la guerra, la más poblada de Siria y su capital económica. Está en el norte del país, en una llanura seca cerca de la frontera con Turquía, y durante siglos fue un cruce clave de las rutas de caravanas entre el Mediterráneo y Mesopotamia; de ahí su enorme casco viejo, Patrimonio de la Humanidad, con su ciudadela sobre un cerro y sus zocos cubiertos. La guerra civil siria (2012-2016) la golpeó durísimo: buena parte de la ciudad vieja y de los mercados históricos quedó destruida o dañada, y hoy vive un lento y complicado proceso de reconstrucción. Su valor aquí es histórico y de contexto, no de guía de viaje activa.Aleppo is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world and, until the war, Syria's most populous city and economic capital. It lies in the north, on a dry plain near the Turkish border, and for centuries was a key crossroads of caravan routes between the Mediterranean and Mesopotamia; hence its vast old town, a World Heritage site, with its citadel on a hill and its covered souqs. The Syrian civil war (2012–2016) hit it terribly hard: much of the old city and the historic markets were destroyed or damaged, and today it lives through a slow, difficult reconstruction. Its value here is historical and contextual, not that of an active travel guide.
