Ringed by vineyards on the valley slopes, it's red-wine and cellar country, with the river turned into an inland port and industrial spine. It was heavily damaged by World War II bombing and rebuilt as a modern city; today it stands out for the interactive science center experimenta and for the urban boost left by the 2019 Federal Garden Show (Bundesgartenschau). Practical rather than monumental, it's a good base for touring vineyards and the Neckar valley.
