It grew around 1900 as a Russian railway city, which gives it an architectural heritage unique in China: the Orthodox St. Sophia Cathedral and Central (Zhongyang) Avenue tell the story. It's famous for its frigid winters and the International Ice and Snow Festival, with illuminated ice sculptures and buildings. It also lends its name to one of the country's oldest beers.
