Hachinohe is a port city in southeastern Aomori prefecture, at the far north of Honshu island, facing the Pacific. It lives off the sea: it's one of Japan's largest fishing ports, which means dawn markets, food alleys, and excellent seafood. Less touristy than inland Aomori, it has a gorgeous coast of natural lawns above the sea, a shrine overrun by gulls, and a cuisine all its own. It's the honest stop in deep northern Japan.
