Hạ Long es la ciudad-puerta de la bahía de Hạ Long, en la provincia de Quảng Ninh, al noreste de Vietnam. La bahía —Patrimonio de la Humanidad— es su razón de ser: miles de islotes y farallones de piedra caliza que emergen de un mar verde esmeralda, recorridos en cruceros de uno o varios días. La ciudad tiene dos caras separadas por el mar: Bãi Cháy, la parte turística de hoteles y el gran complejo de ocio, y Hòn Gai (Hồng Gai), el lado más local y portuario. Es la base clásica para dormir, embarcar y salir a la bahía.Hạ Long is the gateway city to Hạ Long Bay, in Quảng Ninh province, northeastern Vietnam. The bay —a World Heritage Site— is its whole reason for being: thousands of limestone islets and pillars rising from emerald-green water, toured on one- or multi-day cruises. The city has two faces split by the sea: Bãi Cháy, the tourist side of hotels and the big leisure complex, and Hòn Gai (Hồng Gai), the more local, port side. It's the classic base to sleep, board and head out onto the bay.
