Haiphong is northern Vietnam’s major port, a city of tree-lined avenues, French buildings and heavy industry in the Red River delta. It is also a gateway to Cát Bà. For orientation, French Quarter —the civic center around the opera house with villas, colonial buildings and broad avenues— and Tam Bạc —a riverfront and old-center market area with shop houses and daily activity beside the river— are two concrete areas. Verifiable anchors include Haiphong Opera House and Du Hang Pagoda.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Haiphong? How much do you need per month in Haiphong?
Haiphong is a port and industrial city in northern Vietnam, not a nomad destination: it works if you want very low costs, excellent food, and to be an hour from Cat Ba and Ha Long Bay, and if you don't mind being one of the few foreigners on your street. It doesn't work if you need coworking spaces, a nomad crowd, or to live in English — daily life here runs in Vietnamese and the remote-work scene barely exists. Home fiber is cheap and fast for local traffic, but the weather punishes: typhoons head-on in summer, humidity running down the walls in spring.

Vietnam has some of the cheapest home internet on the planet and Haiphong is no exception: 100 to 200 Mbps fiber for around ≈US$8 to US$12 a month, installed within days. For domestic traffic and streaming it's flawless. The weak spot is international traffic: the undersea cables serving Vietnam (AAG, APG and friends) break uncomfortably often, and when they do, video calls and downloads from servers abroad crawl for days or weeks until repairs finish. New cables have come online in recent years and it has improved, but it still happens. If your job lives on Zoom or Meet, have a plan B — 4G mobile data is excellent, dirt cheap, often better than fiber during those episodes, and coverage across the city is solid. Vietnam is not China — Google, WhatsApp and your work tools run normally — but some services get flaky and a VPN on hand doesn't hurt.
CoworkingCoworking
Straight talk: there's no coworking scene here. Haiphong is a factory-and-port city, not a remote-work one, and the little that opens tends to be a serviced office for companies rather than a place with a nomad community. If you find one, budget ≈US$50 to US$90 a month for a hot desk, but check it's still open before you count on it — don't base your move on it. What there is plenty of is cafés: Vietnam works from the coffee shop, wifi is decent and outlets are everywhere, and the national chains (Highlands, Cộng) plus the independents around Văn Cao and Lạch Tray double as offices. A coffee a day costs less than any membership. If you genuinely need coworking with events and people, Hanoi is an hour and a half to two hours away by expressway.
Hải An es la zona nueva hacia el aeropuerto de Cát Bi: complejos modernos con alberca y seguridad, más aire y menos alma, buena si priorizas la comodidad sobre estar en el corazón de la ciudad.Hồng Bàng is the French colonial center, around the Opera House and Điện Biên Phủ street: the prettiest, most walkable part of the city, with old buildings, Tam Bạc lake and most of the few foreigners around. Ngô Quyền, especially the Văn Cao–Lạch Tray corridor, is where the local middle class lives: newer apartment buildings, gyms, cafés and food at any hour, great value. Lê Chân is denser and more working-class, very central and cheap, with the markets and the most authentic street life — and more noise. Hải An is the newer zone toward Cát Bi airport: modern complexes with pools and security, more air and less soul, good if you value comfort over being in the heart of the city.
ComunidadCommunity
You won't find the nomad bubble that exists in Da Nang or Hoi An. Haiphong's foreign community is small and made up mostly of Korean and Japanese managers and engineers from the factories around the city (LG runs a huge complex here), plus a cluster of English teachers; Spanish speakers are close to nonexistent, so assume it: your social life will be in English with foreigners or in Vietnamese with locals. Organized meetups are rare and tend to happen through Facebook groups or the bars where the teacher crowd gathers. Haiphong people have a reputation across Vietnam for being blunt and for drinking hard, and they're genuinely warm if you make the effort; English outside younger people is limited, so picking up basic Vietnamese and leaning on a translator stops being optional. If you need community and events, Hanoi two hours away is your escape valve.
The weather is the real filter. Haiphong sits on the Gulf of Tonkin and takes typhoons head-on between July and October — not a distant storm: in September 2024 Typhoon Yagi came ashore right here and wrecked the city, days without power and the airport shut. From February to April comes the nồm, that northern humidity that condenses water on floors and walls, ruins clothes and molds anything you leave still: here a dehumidifier is a basic appliance, not a luxury. Winter is cold, grey and hazy with poor air quality, and many homes have no real heating. Add the traffic: it's a port city, heavy trucks mixed in with scooters, and riding here is not Da Nang. On paperwork, Vietnam has no digital nomad visa; the e-visa gives up to 90 days with multiple entries, so a long stay means border runs — check the current rules before booking, because they change often. When you rent, your landlord must register your temporary residence with the local police: if they don't, the problem lands on you. And ask what rate you're billed for electricity — foreigners routinely get charged well above the official tariff.
Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
