It sits in the heart of the Pearl River Delta, in Guangdong province, wedged between Guangzhou and Shenzhen, and a big share of the electronics and textiles you own came out of here. The climate is humid subtropical: long, hot, rainy summers and mild winters. You don't come for monuments, you come to understand industrial China for real, and you pick up some history too: in the Humen district by the river is where, in 1839, Lin Zexu destroyed the opium that sparked the First Opium War.
