It's a historic city on the old route to Shaanxi: the timber plank roads that crossed the ranges passed through here, and just nearby is the Jianmen Pass, a natural fortress celebrated in Chinese poetry. Guangyuan also claims to be the birthplace of Wu Zetian, the only woman to reign as emperor of China, honored at the Huangze Temple on the banks of the Jialing. With carved Buddhist cliffs and a well-preserved old town, it's a worthwhile stop for anyone traveling northern Sichuan.
