Gijón

Aprox. 277,554 habitantesApprox. 277,554 people

Gijón is the largest city in Asturias, on Spain's northern Cantabrian coast. It's a seafaring, cider town: in Cimavilla, the old quarter on the Santa Catalina headland, the cider houses (chigres) pour Asturian sidra, and up top stands the Elogio del Horizonte, Chillida's great sculpture facing the sea. San Lorenzo beach curves in a crescent right in the centre, and to the west looms the vast Universidad Laboral. You eat fabada, cachopo and Cantabrian seafood, with frequent rain and green everywhere.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Gijón?How much do you need per month in Gijón?

Gijón works if you want a calm European base that's cheap by Spanish standards, with the sea, excellent food and zero big-city stress: you walk almost everywhere, the fiber is first-world, and your money goes noticeably further than in Madrid, Barcelona or Málaga. It doesn't work if you need sun (winters are grey, damp and dark by six, and summer sits around 22-24 °C / 72-75 °F except on the occasional hot southerly-wind day), if you want a big nomad scene where you land and instantly have twenty friends, or if you speak no Spanish: daily life here happens in Spanish, not English. It's a city for staying months and building a local routine, not for three weeks and a hop.

This is where Spain shines: symmetric fiber from 300 Mbps to 1 Gbps for ≈US$30-50 (€27-45) a month — cheaper with low-cost providers — quick installation and very high reliability: no blackouts, no chronic outages, and video calls just work. 5G covers the whole city well; it gets patchy once you head into inland Asturian villages or out to the coastal coves. A SIM with plenty of data runs ≈US$9-18 (€8-16) a month. The practical catch: signing a fiber contract in your own name requires an NIE and a Spanish bank account, so if you're only staying a few months, look for a flat with internet already included. Cafés have decent wifi, but there's no culture of camping at a table for five hours with a laptop.

CoworkingCoworking

Small but genuine scene, with hot desks at ≈US$110-165 (€100-150) a month. The professional ecosystem revolves around the Milla del Conocimiento, the science-and-tech park and the Viesques university campus, and the city council runs municipal business centers with subsidized desks and small offices for freelancers and early-stage projects — usually the cheapest way in, so ask about them. I won't invent names of private coworkings I'm not sure about; scout them once you're there. What I can tell you: in any space you'll meet far more Asturian freelancers and small companies than international nomads, and there are no weekly community events like in Lisbon or Madrid. If you need a bigger tech buzz, Oviedo is ≈30-40 minutes away by train or bus.

The Centro / Ensanche (around Calle Corrida and Plaza del Instituto) is the most practical: everything on foot, cafés, supermarkets and the beach five minutes away — and the priciest. Cimadevilla, the old fishermen's quarter on the Santa Catalina headland, is the prettiest and the loudest: gorgeous midweek, party until late on weekends. El Bibio, El Coto and Viesques, toward the eastern end of San Lorenzo beach, is what people who stay for months usually pick: residential, quiet, close to the sea and the campus, better value. La Arena, right behind the beach, is convenient and in high demand. To stretch your budget, El Llano, La Calzada or Pumarín are honest local neighborhoods — plainer and further from the coast, but noticeably cheaper.

ComunidadCommunity

The everyday language is Spanish, full stop; you'll hear Asturian in expressions and signage, but nobody expects you to speak it. English alone gets you through tourist situations and not much else. The foreign community is small and not organized the way it is in Málaga or Valencia: there are language exchanges, a few running and surf groups and the student life around the Viesques campus, but don't count on weekly nomad meetups. Real socializing happens at the chigre (cider bar): cider is poured from height and the culín is shared from a single glass, so meeting people on a surface level is very fast. The honest part: people in Gijón are warm but have lifelong friend groups, and moving from "nice chat at the bar" to actual friendship takes months of showing up.

The weather is the real filter: the orbayu, that fine constant drizzle, can last for days, and from November to March the city is grey, damp and dark by six in the evening. Plenty of people love the summer and fall apart in January — if you're coming from the tropics or your mood depends on sunlight, try a winter first, not an August. Watch the damp indoors too: many older flats are poorly insulated, and mould in wardrobes and on cold walls is a common complaint — check the orientation and the heating before you sign. Second warning: housing. Standard leases are long-term and landlords often want a deposit, a guarantor or Spanish payslips, which is awkward for a foreign freelancer; furnished "seasonal" flats are easier but noticeably pricier, and in July and August (Semana Grande included) the city fills with holidaymakers and short-stay prices spike. Third, bureaucracy: NIE, empadronamiento and appointment slots that take weeks — start the paperwork before you need it. If you're not from the EU, remember the Schengen 90-days-in-180 limit; Spain does have a digital nomad visa, but requirements change and you should confirm them with the consulate. Fourth, connectivity: Asturias airport has few direct international routes, so most trips route through Madrid or Barcelona, and the train to Madrid takes roughly 3-4 hours. Safety: Gijón is one of Spain's calm cities, with no areas you need to avoid at night. And the small things that still bite: many shops close at midday and on Sundays, and you won't find well-paid local work here — this is a city to enjoy while getting paid from abroad.

Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person.
